Kampung Sri Pantai Senggarang, Batu Pahat, Johor

Kampung Orang Asli Sri Pantai Senggarang, Batu Pahat, Johor is a medium-sized community of 700 orang asli residents located 30km from the IMU Clinical Campus Batu Pahat. The adults constitute approximately 75% of the population, with about 150 children. A high proportion of them work as fishermen while others do odd jobs and small businesses. The villagers have low income and seldom visit the local health clinic due to their workload and the lack of health awareness.

During a discussion with the leader of the village, it was noted that there is a significant presence of non-communicable diseases (e.g. diabetes mellitus, hypertension). Their adherence to hospital visits and medications are poor. Their knowledge on nutrition, hygiene, healthy lifestyle, female health, family planning and breast feeding is also inadequate. The environment outside their dwellings are poorly maintained, which runs a risk of breeding mosquitoes. A number of the adolescents are known to be engaged in unhealthy behaviours such as substance abuse and smoking.

Due to these factors, it was felt that this community would benefit from a concerted effort on health screening, general health and nutritional education.

  • To screen for early detection of selected risk factors and non-communicable diseases.
  • To screen children for dental problems, developmental delays and selected congenital diseases.
  • To enhance their knowledge through effective health education and encourage the appropriate use of existing health services.
  • To encourage and empower the community through advice and active participation to adopt a healthy lifestyle and maintain a clean and healthy environment.
  • To provide a practical educational experience for IMU Semester 10 medical students.

Target Audience

  • Rural villagers
