Tong Sim Senior Citizen Care Centre, Salak South Baru, Kuala Lumpur

Tong Sim Senior Citizen Care Centre houses senior citizens who have been abandoned by their families. Many of them were admitted to the hospitals for medical care by their own family members, however once they were ready for discharge, they were abandoned with no contact. These elderly people were left behind at hospitals with nowhere to go.

Hospitals in the Klang Valley and other areas have been sending these elderly people to Tong Sim Senior Citizen Care Centre for care and shelter. The centre has been around for more than 10 years. Some folks are immobile and in need of nursing care, while others are independent. Some volunteers come once or twice a week to help bathe the elderly residents, help with daily activities, or simply keep them company.

Mr Cheong Loy, a coffin-maker, runs the centre as well as a funeral parlour on the grounds of the Kwong Tong Cemetery in Sungai Besi. There are currently two sites where the elderly residents stay – first is on the first floor above the funeral parlour; second is at Salak Selatan. There are around 60 residents staying at the first site, and another 20 at the second home.
