Quit Smoking Campaign

Overview

Cigarette smoking harms the organ of the body and causes many diseases. It is one of the health hazards that can be avoided. In view of supporting the community in smoking cessation, IMU has launched the Quit Smoking Service (QSS), where people can receive counselling service and treatment. IMU Cares and the IMU Wellness programme are supporting this service by reaching out to the communities in our vicinity in the effort to encourage people to quit smoking.

Students through the MPU U4 module can also show their support by promoting the service available for smoking cessation, creating educational materials regarding the health effects of smoking and the services available, as well as conducting surveys around IMU Bukit Jalil campus.

Expected benefits:

  1. Staff, students, patients and communities will be empowered about the harmful effects of smoking as well as the benefits of quitting.
  2. People will be aware of quit smoking programmes and can reach out for getting help to quit smoking service in order to have successful quitting process.
  3. Patients visiting IMU Healthcare, Oral Health Centre, chiropractic and Chinese medicine will benefit from the informative buntings and brochures.
  4. IMU-Care communities including school settings will benefit from this campaign in terms of getting empowered and taking decisions for their health and well-being.

Expected outcomes:

  1. Volunteers will be able to develop and formulate evidence based informative buntings and brochures for quit smoking campaign.
  2. Volunteers will be able to communicate with the community and will get a chance on improving their communication skills.

IMU Cares Integration with MPU (U4) Module

Many student groups have been conducting community service projects at existing IMU Cares Community Partners as part of their MPU (U4) project. Find below the list of activities that students can undertake as part of their MPU (U4) project. Each student group may select one of the following:

To create a promotional bunting on Quit Smoking campaign (IMU-QSC) – ‘Break the Habit’ an initiative of IMU-Quit Smoking Service (IMU-QSS).

The students will be directed to design buntings to promote the awareness of smoking cessation using infographics and motivational intervention messages. Such phrases include “Quit Smoking”, “Save Money”, “Save Your Health”, and “Make Your Family Happy”.

To create an informative brochure that should target the following domains:

To conduct a survey on smoking cessation within the vicinity of IMU Bukit Jalil campus.

An anonymous survey would be essential to gather information about the habits of general population within the vicinity of IMU and their awareness about smoking cessation. The survey should be simple and quick to conduct. It should include the following information:- Demographic information (i.e. age, gender, occupation, etc.),

To promote the awareness of smoking and its adverse effects to communities.

Under IMU-Cares projects, existing suitable communities will be targeted based on their needs assessment. Those communities that would highlight the need will be assessed with quit smoking awareness programme.

To conduct a quit smoking campaign at schools (upper primary / lower secondary).

Smoking is a habit which can be taken up at an early age especially during school years. This is the right age to empower young adults about making right decisions for their well- being. Quit smoking campaign will target schools (upper primary / lower secondary) for carrying out awareness programme. This will be done by interactive talks and game based activities.
