Four Semester One medical students formed a team which represented Malaysia and International Medical University in a movie making competition at the 28th East- Asia Medical Students’ Conference held in Jakarta, Indonesia this year. The movie is on social stigma and insensitivity towards the needs and well-being of HIV patients. The students relates their experience here. “It was back in October when we formed a team of four to participate in an academic-based Movie Making Competition by AMSA Malaysia. We were a group of Semester 1 medical students: Danial Hakim, Jeremy Tan Ern Hwei, June Lee Pui Yin, Tan Sue Fen. Representing IMU and Malaysia, we focused on one of the highest prevalence in STIs – HIV for the movie. We zoomed into the life of Jane to encourage HIV-positive individuals to speak out, to seek medical help and emotional support. The video portrayed the ramifications of social stigma and insensitivity towards the needs and wellbeing of HIV patients. We hope that the public and HIV-patients can reach out to newly-diagnosed individuals by offering them friendship, care and emotional support like our character Jimmy did.
As the national winning team, we went on to represent Malaysia at an international level. After being selected as one of the top 10 finalists, we competed at the 28th East-Asian Medical Students’ Conference 2015 held in Jakarta, Indonesia and emerged as 1st runner up.
We were extremely happy upon receiving the news. For most of us, it was our first time participating and also winning in an international academic based competition. If we are blessed with the opportunity to participate in a competition of a similar nature in the future, we hope to perform even better and make IMU proud!” View the movie by clicking here.
