18 December 2016- IMU School of Dentistry organised a workshop on the best practices in caries management to discuss the rationale behind the caries risk assessment, use of advanced diagnostic tools in early detection of dental caries and their role in preventive care of caries management. The workshop was held at IMU, Bukit Jalil campus and was attended by 77 participants from Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore including general dental practitioners, specialists, dental academic staff, Ministry of Health personnel and dental students. The objectives of this workshop were to enhance their knowledge and skills in developing personalised caries preventive strategies and caries control protocol for patients, manage dental caries from Black to the future with ICCMS way and use of advanced diagnostic tools in early caries detection. Prof David N J Ricketts, Professor of Cariology and Conservative Dentistry / Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry, University of Dundee, Dr Nurul Syakirin bt Abdul Shukor, Senior Principal Assistant Director, Oral Health Division, Malaysia, Dr Hanan Omar, Head, Clinical Dentistry, IMU were the main speakers for this workshop. Prof Ricketts shared his experience in managing complex clinical cases under the International Caries Classification and Management System (ICCMS), Dr Nurul Syakirin bt Abdul Shukor highlighted the implementation of ICDAS in the Oral Health Programme, Ministry of Health Malaysia and Dr Hanan Omar shared the protocol for the personalised caries prevention using the ICCMS way.
The workshop had a hands-on activity on use of diagnostic tools such as diagnodent and soprolife in early detection and monitoring of carious lesions, which was facilitated by Prof Seow Liang Lin, Dr Abhishek Parolia and the IMU caiology team. The hands-on activity enriched the participants with the knowledge and skills in using these advanced technologies.
Most participants stated that the workshop was relevant, informative and useful for current practice. Participants enjoyed the interactive session and suggested that more similar workshops be conducted in the future.
