IMU and IMC Nurses Celebrate Nurses Day 2017

15 May 2017 – 80 participants attended the Nurses Day celebrations which was collaboratively organised by the Nursing Division of International Medical University (IMU) and International Medical College (IMC) in conjunction with International Nurses Day. The event was held at the University’s campus in Bukit Jalil. The theme for this year’s Nurses Day is ‘Nurses: A Voice to Lead, Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’. Invited VIP guest was Matron Puan Hjh Rosena Hj Abd Ghani, Director of the Nursing Board Malaysia while VIP guests from IMU and IMC were Dr Mei Ling Young, Deputy Vice Chancellor, International and Engagement; Prof Peter Pook, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic; Prof Victor Lim, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Education; Prof Chin Beek Yoke, Associate Dean (Research and External Affairs), School of Health Sciences; and Ng Kok Toh, Principal of IMC. The celebration was officiated by A/Prof Shar Mariam, Associate Dean, School of Health Sciences (Academic and Quality). The keynote address was presented by A/Prof Ho Siew Eng, Head of Nursing Division, IMU who introduced the meaning of this year’s Nurses Day theme and its significance in the overall healthcare’s future direction. She highlighted three ways in which nurses can be a voice to lead: as an individual, as a professional and as part of a multidisciplinary team. She emphasised her point by quoting  Mother Theresa “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” A video on the Nurses Day theme, adopted from the International Council of Nursing 2017, was presented at the event. The insightful and informative presentation in the video was very beneficial for the participants. All registered nurses at the event participated in the reading of the pledge, led by Leong Chan Fong from IMU. This was followed by a cake cutting ceremony. IMU nursing students then presented a video on the activities and achievements of the Nursing Division from both IMU and IMC. Participants of the event were  then dazzled with the student performances, a choir presentation from IMU students and a musical sketch from IMC students. Research poster presentation and a sharing session by the IMU alumna were included in the celebrations. Lim Siew Pei delivered a presentation on “Life after Graduation, Moving in Nursing Direction” describing how she strives to continue providing optimal holistic nursing care to patients. Additionally, an interactive game session was conducted. The session was led by IMU nursing students, Leong Kar Yan and Theresa Roselinne Tanaka. At the conclusion of the event, Tang Wai Mun, the Organising Chairperson and IMU lecturer, extended her appreciation and thanked all attendees for joining this event.
