Computational materials science expands our understanding of the properties of materials and the phenomena associated with their design, synthesis, characterisation, and utilisation. 
28 – 30 September 2017 – A three day Materials Science Suite workshop was organised by the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department, School of Pharmacy. The workshop brought together 33 chemistry and engineering researchers, academics and postgraduate students from various institutions to IMU. 
The workshop was started with a welcome speech by Prof Mallikarjuna Rao Pichika, Associate Dean for Research and Industrial Engagement, School of Pharmacy. In his welcome speech, Prof Mallikarjuna extended a particularly warm welcome to the 16 external delegates from Monash Malaysia, University Malaya (UM), University Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC), University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS), Malaysia Palm Oil Board (MPOB) and Malaysia Rubber Board.
The workshop was conducted by experienced and knowledgeable speakers Raghu Rangaswamy (Vice President, Schrodinger), Dr Sudharsan Pandiyan (Application Scientist, Schrodinger) and Dr Alexander Goldberg (Senior Principle Materials Scientist, Schrodinger). Delegates gained insight and hands-on practice in utilising a diverse set of simulation and computational tools for computing the structure, reactivity, and properties of chemical systems.
The third day of the workshop focused on the application of computational materials science in research and industry, where it was conducted mainly in an interactive format. Delegates shared their research areas and were advised by the speakerson how computational methods can solve their research problems. The three day workshop concluded with a short closing ceremony where the speakers were presented with a token of appreciation by A/Prof Mohd Zulkefeli bin Mat Jusoh, Dean of the School of Pharmacy. The Dean thanked the delegates and speakers for their support to the workshop, and wished them well in their journey home.
