Kuala Lumpur, 10 June 2019 – The International Medical University (IMU), Malaysia’s premier private medical and health sciences university, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CryoCord Sdn Bhd (CryoCord), a leading stem cell bank in Southeast Asia to collaborate on various grounds in the field of medical biotechnology especially in the field of stem cells and immunotherapy.
Both parties agreed to |

(i) collaborate in research and development activities with sharing of resources |
(ii) provide cultural and intellectual enrichment opportunities for staff and students |
(iii) collaborate in community service activities to raise awareness on stem cells and its application within the community |
The MoU was signed on behalf of IMU by Prof Peter Pook, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic and for CryoCord by James Then Khong Lek, Managing Director. The ceremony was witnessed by Prof Winnie Chee, Dean of the School of Health Sciences, IMU and Dr Then Kong Yong, Chief Technical Officer of CryoCord. Also present were staff representatives from both IMU and CryoCord.
In addition to this, IMU has also appointed CryoCord as one of the board members for the School of Health Sciences’ Graduate Preparedness Advisory Committee. The advisory committee, comprising of a panel of industry experts, aims to review and strengthen the curriculum of health sciences programmes with the latest industry best practises and relevance to their respective industries, which in turn, IMU is able to provide a pipeline of well-trained and in-demand-driven skilled graduates. “I am very happy that the Medical Biotechnology team in IMU has established such an eminent industry partner into their curriculum. This will enhance the experiential learning of the students into stem cell research and its application to improve human health. I am sure this collaboration will be very beneficial for the faculty and institution as a whole to expand the knowledge and research in this area with CryoCord’s support”, said Prof Winnie Chee, Dean, School of Health Sciences, IMU. “Over the years, we have built strong scientific collaborations with various universities and are excited in expanding our collaborations with IMU. We believe that through academia and industry partnerships, researchers from both sides can mutually help to translate discoveries in the field of regenerative medicine and immunotherapy to bridge the unmet medical needs.
