13 July 2019 – Final year IMU dental student, Tan Jun Hong was awarded the second prize at the Malaysian International Dental Exhibition and Conference (MIDEC) Scientific Oral Presentation Competition 2019. He delivered a presentation entitled “Comparing the Nanoleakage and Degree of Conversion of Three Different Bonding Systems in Class V Cavities” based on a project by a team of three final year dental students consisted of Presenter, Tan Jun Hong and two co-authors, Tan Vei Xhion and Ng Qi En, under the supervision of Dr Umer Daood, Prof Seow Liang Lin and A/Prof Dr Hanan Omar. It was indeed a daunting experience for Jun Hong as an undergraduate student competing against academicians and dentists who are pursuing their postgraduate studies. The team were the only undergraduate team in this competition and Tan Jun Hong was the only undergraduate presenter. When asked about his experience, Jun Hong said that he never expected to have his name announced as the winner of the second prize. He mentioned that he delivered his best for the presentation and the main reason he participated was less about winning but more about the learning experience as well as being able to network with fellow dental colleagues. However, he is very proud to be able to make his supervisors, fellow teammates and IMU proud by taking the second prize in this competition.
