Centre for Cancer and Stem Cell Research of the Institute for Research, Development and Innovation (IRDI) in collaboration with the School of Pharmacy, International Medical University (IMU) successfully organised a Translational Research Seminar featuring two speakers on 27 August 2019 at the University’s campus in Bukit Jalil. The first speaker was Prof Zaheer-Ud-Din Babar who is Professor in Medicines and Healthcare and the Director of Centre of Pharmaceutical Policy and Practice Research at the University of Huddersfield, United Kingdom. His research focuses on pharmaceutical policy and practice, including quality use of medicines, clinical pharmacy practice, access to medicines, and issues related to pharmacoeconomics.
Prof Zaheer delivered a talk on “Pharmacy Practice Research: Differences, Working and Implementation in Low, Middle and High Income Countries”. He highlighted the gap of pharmacy practice between high-, middle- and low-income countries and how this gap can be bridged by employing pharmacy practice research methods techniques, such as qualitative techniques, quantitative methods, systematic reviews, and meta-analysis to improve medicine use in the society.
This was followed by Nadeem Zia’s talk titled “Administration of Injections by Pharmacists: An Overview of Canadian Pharmacy Practice”. Zia currently works as a Clinical Pharmacist – Pharmacy Department Educator with the Sidra Medical and Research Center, Doha Qatar. Community pharmacies in Canada have moved from only dispensing medication to providing more clinical services which includes administration of injections and medication management. Zia deliberated on the overview of Canadian pharmacists receiving education, hands-on training and license before they administer injections in Canada.
