On 4 and 5 Oct 2022, the IRDI Research Lab and Biomed Global (formerly known as Biomarketing Services Sdn Bhd) successfully organised its inaugural workshop on Flow Cytometry: Principles, Cell Analysis and Sorting. The workshop attracted participants from various backgrounds ranging from students, lab analysts and research officers from various R&D institutes and universities in Malaysia. We are honoured to have three eminent speakers who also served as facilitator for the practical sessions for the workshop.
Speakers for the Workshop | ||
---|---|---|
A/Prof Leong Pooi Pooi | A/Prof Leong Pooi Pooi is the Deputy Dean of Student Development and Industry Training and serves as teaching core faculty in Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University Tunku Abdul Rahman. Her research expertise is on the immunobiology of viral infections, stem cells and community health. | |
A/Prof Felicia Chung | A/Prof Felicia Chung received her postdoctoral fellowship from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (France), the specialized cancer agency of the World Health Organization, where she joined the Mechanisms of Carcinogenesis section. She investigated mechanisms of epigenome stability, epigenetic biomarkers of cancer, and the impact of genetic alterations on the epigenome. Her current research interests include cancer mutational signatures, intratumor heterogeneity, and the epigenetic mechanisms of cancer immune evasion. | |
See Hui Shien | See Hui Shien is the Director of Application (Life Sciences) attached with Biomed Global with over 14 years of experience in providing user training for various clinical diagnostics and life sciences research technology platforms, especially in flow cytometry. |
The workshop focused on basic principles and advanced applications of flow cytometry for research and clinical diagnosis. Participants were provided with knowledge on how to use multiple dyes simultaneously for the detection, characterization and sorting of various immune cells with practical demonstration and hands-on experimental setup, data acquisition, data analysis and troubleshooting.
Prof Patricia Lim Kim Chooi (IMU), Head of Research Lab & Support Services, in her capacity as the workshop Chairman, welcomed the speakers and participants with a brief introduction to the workshop. This was followed by lectures from A/Prof Leong Pooi Pooi (UTAR) and A/Prof Felicia Chung Fei Lei (Sunway University) on basic principles and advanced applications of flow cytometry in their respective fields.
Next, See Hui Shien (Biomed Global) shared her experience and knowledge on the cell-sorting applications.
During the extensive hands-on session, she and her team advised participants on the experimental design, instrument operations, as well as data analysis across different BD flow cytometry systems. She appreciated the participants for their enthusiasm and persistence in learning new technologies.
The workshop ended with closing remarks by Prof Patricia Lim Kim Chooi (IMU) and awarding of certificates of attendance to the participants. We would like to thank the organising committee members, speakers and participants for making this workshop a very successful one.
