Navigating Challenges, Reaping Rewards: My Journey Pursuing an IMU MSc in Public Health

Public Health encompasses both the art and science of safeguarding against diseases, extending life expectancy, and advancing overall well-being. Its scope goes beyond maintenance of health by reducing or eliminating disease risks and environmental health hazards, improving social conditions, and encouraging healthy behaviours and lifestyles.  Additionally, it involves the distribution and optimal management of healthcare services. Today, public health professionals encounter a multitude of long standing and emerging challenges.

With this in mind, IMU’s Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) programme, which is available in both traditional and open and distance learning (ODL) formats, will provide students from a wide range of health and related professional backgrounds with the knowledge and skills in public health sciences which will make them effective contributors in their field of healthcare. A student who pursued the programme through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode, Haranee A/P Paramalingam, shares with us her journey.

IMU’s MSPH programme was a comprehensive and dynamic educational experience that equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to address complex public health challenges. Throughout the programme, I had the privilege to engage in a range of academic activities, practical experiences, and collaborative projects that ignited my passion for both science-based knowledge and community service. The modules delivered under the programme also provided me with a solid foundation in the principles and theories of public health and played a crucial role in developing my proficiency in research methods and data analysis, thereby allowing me to conduct meaningful studies in the field of public health.

The hands-on learning experiences to bridge the gaps between theory and practice garnered during field visits, elective attachments, and on-campus practical sessions, had provided me with the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom to real-world public health challenges, develop professional skills, and gain real-world insights into public health practice.

One of the most memorable experiences during my MSPH journey was a field visit that elucidated the roles and functions of the local health authority that coincided with the framework for public health to protect and promote the health of all members of the community. It was a rewarding experience to witness the positive impact the health department had in improving the health and well-being of the community.

Nevertheless, the MSPH programme wasn’t without its challenges. Balancing coursework, research projects, and other commitments required excellent time management skills and dedication. There were times when I felt overwhelmed, but the support of my peers and lecturers kept me motivated and focused. The guidance and mentorship of faculty members who were experts in their respective fields, were invaluable in shaping my research interests and helping me refine my career goals within the realm of public health.

In short, the MSPH programme was undoubtedly a challenging and rewarding experience. It equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and passion necessary to pursue a career in public health and contribute towards the well-being of communities.
