Postgraduate Diploma in Implant Dentistry

IMU’s Implant Dentistry programme is the first and only Accredited programme recognized by the Malaysian Qualifying Agency (MQA) and Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), and benchmarked against The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Designed for the working dentist, students have the flexibility to learn at their own pace and build their confidence in developing their clinical skills at IMU’s Oral Health Centre or at the student’s own clinic.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

Programme Aims and Educational Objectives

This programme is aimed at increasing the knowledge and clinical skills of dental surgeons who have the intention to widen the scope of clinical dental care of patients using dental implants. The course builds upon existing clinical practice to develop their full potential as a competent provider of dental implant care.

The objectives of the IMU Postgraduate Diploma in Implant Dentistry Programme (PGDID) are:

To provide advanced knowledge and foster critical analysis of scientific and clinical approaches in implant dentistry,
To provide students the opportunity to develop knowledge and clinical skills through a structured course to plan and treat straightforward and some advanced partially and fully edentulous patients using dental implants.

Programme Structure and Module Synopsis
TOTAL – 30 Credits

SIX Modules in PGDID Programme

1	Fundamentals and effective communication in implant dentistry (FCID)
2	Implant treatment of partial edentulism (IPE)
3	Implant practice I (IP1)
4	Implant treatment of complete edentulism (ICE)
5	Entrepreneurship, professionalism and managing complications (EPC)
6	Implant practice II (IP2)

The Final Professional Examination will be conducted once a year.

Full-Time

The course learning outcomes will be delivered over a period of one year. Those who cannot complete the cases within one year have another two years to complete their cases (Total three years from the date of inception). For full-time option, students have minimum one year and maximum three years to complete their ten treatment planning cases in their logbook and SIX completely restored cases in portfolio.

Part-Time

The course learning outcomes will be delivered over a period of two years. Those who cannot complete the cases within two years have another two years to complete their cases (Total four years from the date of inception). For part-time option, students have minimum two years and maximum four years to complete their ten treatment planning cases in their logbook and six completely restored cases in portfolio

Assessment

Both the full-time and part-time students have formative and summative assessments. These include online single best answer questions (SBA), short answer questions (SAQ), objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) and submit a logbook with treatment planning of ten implant cases and portfolio of six cases completed with implant placement and final prosthesis.

Applicants are required to: Registered as a dental surgeon with the Malaysian Dental Council (MDC) or equivalent in the student’s home country. Having at least two years post-graduation clinical experience. Participants who possess a current Annual Practice Certificate(APC) to practise dentistry in Malaysia. Participants who are eligible to practise dentistry in Malaysia with a Temporary Practice Certificate(TPC). All candidates need to be issued an APC or TPC(whichever is applicable) that is specific to the IMU Oral Health Centre(OHC) to be eligible to attend the clinical sessions in the centre during the period of the study. Frequently Asked Questions

I read in the PGDID programme prospectus that this is a one-year full-time course. I have my own private practice. Will I be able to complete the course in one year?

Yes, as this programme has been designed with the working dental practitioners in mind; dental practitioners who have registered for the course are guided and mentored to fulfil the requirements of the course in one year for full-time track and two years for part-time track. However, those who may not be able to commit the time to fulfil the requirements will have a maximum period of three years for full-time and four years for part-time from the date to commencement to complete the course.

You will receive guidance from experienced specialist practitioners on how to prepare your clinic to provide implant treatment for your patients to successfully fulfil the course requirements.

As this course is a national-approved programme, will I be considered a dental implant specialist?

Implant dentistry, like anywhere else in the world, is not considered a specialist discipline. However, the degree qualification can be added to your credentials to certify that you are trained through an approved university course to provide implant treatment.

What is the programme structure like?

There is a total of 6 Modules in the programme. There will be a compulsory 5-day block for Modules 1, Module 2, Module 4 and Module 5. These will be held at IMU whereby there will be face-to-face activities such as lectures, seminars, practical sessions (hands-on), case-based discussion etc. After the 5-day block, the remaining teaching/learning activities e.g. seminars and case-based learning are conducted online and through web conferencing. Students will have the option of treating the clinical cases in IMU Oral Health Centre under direct supervision or in their own dental practice with initial direct supervision and later by distant supervision using a video recording system. The entire programme stretches over 43 weeks covering teaching/learning activities and examinations.

When does the course begin?

The 2024 programme begins with a programme orientation on 18 October 2024. This will be followed by the commencement of the 5-day teaching/learning blocks as follows for the six modules. Visit this LINK to see the academic calendar for this programme.

Will I be eligible to get the Diploma in Implant Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh since this programme is benchmarked to this qualification?

You will not be eligible to get the Diploma in Implant Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) of Edinburgh even though this programme is benchmarked to this qualification. Candidates must appear and pass separately for RCS Edinburgh Diploma in Implant Dentistry examination. The IMU PGDID course have learning outcomes matched to the standards of the RCS Edinburgh with similar examination format, logbook and portfolio.

What implant system will be used?

Students will be required to understand the rationale for the choice of implant systems. The PGDID programme is not system-based. We shall be teaching/exposing the students to implant systems with good research evidence of success that include Straumann, Nobel BioCare, Astra Tech.

Does IMU provide patients for clinical training?

IMU will try to support students for the initial few cases. It is encouraged that students find their own cases for implant placement and restoration.

If I am currently practising in another country, will I be able to treat patients at IMU?

Yes, as long as you fulfill our entry requirements, you will be able to treat patients in IMU as a postgraduate student under supervision.

If I need to treat my patients who require dental implants at IMU would that be possible? What will be the arrangement and costs for the patient?

Yes, it would be possible to bring your patients to be treated by you at IMU under PGDID staff supervision. The patient would need to pay for treatment according to reduced patient treatment fees of IMU Oral Health Centre for patients treated by PGDID postgraduate students.

What will be the arrangement and costs for patients treated in my own clinic?

You will initially need direct supervision for patients treated in your own clinic for dental implants and for more challenging cases. For this, IMU will arrange for suitable supervisors to be present in your clinic. There will be extra fees that you will need to pay to support the attendance of the supervisors in your clinic as per the clinical supervision guidelines. The quantum will depend on the time spent, travel and accommodation need (where necessary) for supervisors to be on site.

What is the application process? What is the deadline for the registration?

Acceptance of candidates into the programme is on a first-come, first-served basis. Upon submission of your online application (link provided above), applicants will be short-listed for an interview. Successful applicants will be notified within three working days.

How many clinical cases do I need to complete in the programme?

Submission of treatment planning for TEN implant cases (patients) in the logbook and completion of SIX implant cases (patients) to be included in the portfolio.

Important note: It’s not the number of implants but number of cases (patients) to be finished before the final exam.

What is the scope of the programme in terms of performing complexity of cases?

Students will be trained to perform simple to advanced types of clinical cases based on ITI SAC classification. Training on Complex surgeries (e.g. sinus lift surgeries) will be done on models.

Should I submit any document before performing clinical cases in IMU Oral healthcare?

Yes, you must submit your Annual Practising Certificate (APC) to your mentor or PGDID Program Director for the respective year with IMU address mentioned on your APC. This submission is mandatory to work in IMU Oral healthcare clinics.
