IMU School of Health Sciences lecturer, Dr Shamala A/P Salvamani won the Best Poster Award at the 3rd International Conference on Molecular Biology and Biotechnology 2019 for her presentation entitled ‘Hypocholesterolemic and anti-atherosclerotic effects of Amaranthus viridis leaf extract in hypercholesterolemia-induced rabbits’. This study revealed that the supplementation with A.viridis extract significantly reduced total cholesterol, LDL and triglyceride levels, and increased the levels of HDL and antioxidant enzymes (SOD and GPx). Treatment with A.viridis extract also diminished the development of aortic plaques and decreased the intima:media ratio. The in vivo study proved that A.viridis leaf extract possesses beneficial therapeutic effects against hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis. Dr Shamala said, “It feels really good when our research is recognised by the scientific community. May this success be a stepping stone to tomorrow’s greater achievements”.

Held at UCSI University, the 3rd International Conference for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (ICMBB), was co-organised by Malaysian Society for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (MSMBB) and UCSI University on 24 and 25 April 2019. The theme of this conference, “Fostering Innovation through Research” described the importance of innovation in driving science forward, while being inclusive and sustainable. The 3rd ICMBB successfully allowed research scientists, industry professionals and young scientists to share experiences, discuss research findings and acquire essential information to build an “innovative mind” as an important aspect in research. More than 200 speakers and delegates came from many countries around the globe, including, Malaysia, England, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Japan, Nigeria, Scotland, Singapore, Sudan, Taiwan and Thailand. The conference covered multidisciplinary topics on advances in research areas in Agriculture, Environment, Medicine, Industry, Food and Microbiology. |
