15 July 2017 – ATHENA: IMU’s Society for Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Women held a one day episiotomy repair workshop for the Semester 10 medical students of Batu Pahat and Kluang at the IMU Clinical Campus in Kluang. The programme was the first of its kind and is organised by ATHENA to encourage members to not only be competent in episiotomy skills but also to reinforce their knowledge on the indications, controversies, repair and documentation as well as medico-legal issues.
A total of 11 participants (1 from Batu Pahat and 10 from Kluang) were present at the workshop. The materials for the workshop such as 2.0 polyvicryl sutures, needle holders and forceps as well as episiotomy models were provided by our kind sponsor, Johnsons and Johnsons. |
The workshop started off at 9am with a welcoming note by the Athena committee. Lee Chin from Johnsons and Johnsons then gave a small informative lecture and video on Ethicon products. The workshop continued with Dr Hussein AKL, a Senior Obstetrics and Gynaecology Lecturer at IMU Clinical Campus in Kluang delivering a preparatory lecture and demonstration of episiotomy repair followed by a practical session. The students then tried performing their own episiotomy repair on the models provided for each student with assistance from Dr Hussein and the Johnsons and Johnsons representatives, Lee Chin and Hanani who were present throughout the workshop. After this session, the students proceeded to the library for a post-workshop quiz with questions prepared by Dr Hussein.
The workshop, all in all, was a success despite the turnout as the small number of participants means that more attention can be given to each student. The students found the workshop to be very beneficial and hoped that more workshops can be conducted in the future.
Our sponsor, Johnsons and Johnsons is also looking forward to future collaborations on other workshops with IMU Athena.
