Expanding Horizons: IMU Dietetics Students’ International Placement in Taiwan

20 Sep 2024

In May 2024, we, a group of five final year Dietetics with Nutrition (DN120) students from IMU University, had an incredible opportunity to participate in a one-month specialised-focused area placement at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. This unique experience significantly broadened our understanding of dietetics on an international scale and enriched our professional and personal growth.

During our time at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, we had the opportunity to observe the hospital’s food service operations. We observed the meticulous processes involved in menu planning, meal preparation, and distribution. The high standards of food safety protocols and the logistics of large-scale food service operations were particularly impressive. These observations underscored the importance of teamwork and communication in delivering high-quality nutritional care, providing us with valuable insights which will shape our future practices.

Additionally, we had the privilege of shadowing 40 different dietitians in both outpatient and inpatient settings. This exposure allowed us to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during our clinical placements at IMU University. We engaged in discussions with our preceptors about local regulations and practices in Taiwan, gaining a comparative perspective that highlighted both similarities and differences in dietetic practices. This practical application reinforced our learning and highlighted the importance of adaptability in diverse healthcare settings.

Learning about the food exchange system in Taiwan

One of the most enlightening aspects of our practicum was learning about cultural diversity and its role in dietetics. We discovered how cultural differences can influence dietary preferences and nutritional counselling approaches. Observing the integration of traditional dietary practices with modern nutritional guidelines enriched our perspective on balancing cultural sensitivity with evidence-based practice. This understanding is crucial for providing patient-centred care and will undoubtedly enhance our effectiveness as future dietitians.

We are deeply grateful to IMU University for providing this remarkable opportunity. The support from IMU has not only deepened our interest in the field of dietetics but also positively influenced our career aspirations.

The exposure to different practices and the collaborative environment at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital have equipped us with a broader perspective and enhanced our capability to contribute effectively to the dietetics profession. Our one-month specialised dietetic practicum placement in Taiwan has been a transformative experience, and we look forward to applying the lessons learned to our future practice.
