13 -14 September 2018 – Four IMU Semester 7 medical students from the ME115 cohort together with IMU Emergency Medicine Lecturer, Dr Rosdara Masayuni, participated in the 1st Malaysia Trauma Conference (MTC) organised by Malaysian Society for the Care of Trauma (MASCOT). The Conference focused on topics that are relevant to Emergency Medicine; including trauma care challenges and reality, abdominal trauma, neurosurgical trauma, orthopaedic trauma, trauma critical care, trauma moulage and paediatric trauma. Multiple slots of workshop were arranged for delivering those topics accordingly.
Eight international speakers and a number of local experts were invited to present their topics and share their expertise and knowledge at this conference. There were around 500 participants including Emergency Physicians (EP), Medical officers, House officers and medical students. The honorable Deputy Minister of Health Malaysia Dr Lee Boon Chye formally opened the conference. During the two-day conference, there were many interesting posters that were exhibited. Dr Rosdara Masayuni presented her research paper entitiled “The Accuracy of Urgent Plain Brain CT Interpretation by Medical Officer”. The paper was selected as a finalist for Oral Presentation. She emphasised that besides enhancing presentation skills during Oral Competition, the more important agenda was hoping that the output of the research paper may improve medical care for patients in future. The paper presented was a collaboration between EP Hospital Tuanku Jaafar Seremban (MOH) and EP PPUKM. Her participation would enhance the academic networking with other Emergency Physicians nationwide in the Emergency Medicine Fraternity. In future more chances in Emergency Medicine field can be created with more collaboration with Ministry of Health (MOH), Government and Private Universities. 
Four enthusiastic IMU medical students attended the conference and presented their accepted posters related to Emergency Medicine topics. Such opportunities given for medical students to participate in this conference had definitely gave them the golden opportunity to increase their confidence level during the presentation and offer more understanding of the cases that they presented. These students presented in an engaging and informative way. 
Students had the chance to meet other participants and get involved in discussions about the healthcare system in different hospitals and other interesting cases and research activities. Besides getting inspired from other case reports and oral presentations, the opportunity to be a participant in this conference stimulated their critical thinking. These skills will further assist their thinking in different ways to improve the health system and offer a better medical service in the future. One of the attraction in this conference was the interesting medical booths for the two days of the conference. At these booths, students were being exposed to different distributors for a ranged of medical equipment. They were shown interesting demonstration of latest procedures and equipment. The highlight of the conference was the final Trauma Moulage Competition which was a mind opener for the trauma team activation of Polytrauma cases – where the Trauma Team members perform a real-life management of a Polytrauma patient. The champion team, Team ED Sg. Buloh showed the audience; their competency in handling polytrauma cases efficiently. Teaching strategies can be more efficient after the input from thie Trauma Moulage slot.
Last but not least, the intellectual debate session between Dr Hidayah (Consultant EP HKL) and Prof Mohd Idzwan (Consultant EP University Malaya) entitled Transducer Probe vs The Stethoscope on trauma resuscitation perspective was one of the most interesting slot in the conference; which provided more information on the use of bedside ultrasound and the importance of stetoscope usage. The opportunity given by IMU to the students and their efforts for preparing for the Posters and Oral presentation were truly appreciated. Out of this participation, it is hoped that, in future, more IMU students will take the opportunity to be part of any conferences and participate in poster or paper presentations.
