On 22 September 2012, approximately RM 131,000 was raised at the IMU Chariofare ’12, a Charity Carnival and Charity Run with all the proceeds going to charity. The event with the theme ‘Live.Run.Love’ was held at the International Medical University’s (IMU) Bukit Jalil Campus in Kuala Lumpur. Held in conjunction with the university’s 20th anniversary celebrations, the event was organised to provide sustainable and continual support to six beneficiaries: Rumah Love and Care, Kajang, Rumah Shalom, Precious Children Home, Yayasan Sunbeams Home, Persatuan Kebajikan Hope Worldwide KL and Association of Social Services and Community Development of Gombak District (PSPK), Selangor.
Besides the run, the carnival had a lineup of exciting activities, including performances from our local student talents and public such as Comedy Game Show by Artificially Intelligent: Improvholics Anonymous (AI:IA), Belly Dance Performance by The Middle East Dance Academy, a Fire Breather and IMU’s very own Michael Jackson Impersonation by Yusri Khir Johari. Game booths, food and drink stalls, a spooky “Haunted Hospital”, a dunking tank and a couple of creative blogshops were also available on that day. As IMU is a medical university, there were also free medical screenings, oral health checks and psychological assessments. The highlight of the event was the Charity Run on the morning of 22 September. The run had a total of 7 categories, including a 3km Family Run Category, and is open to Malaysians and international runners. All participants who completed the run was given a finishers’ certificate with the top 100 runners in all categories (except Family Run) receiving a finishers’ medal. Reverend S Arulandu from Rumah Shalom says “I am very thankful to the students of IMU and proud of them. I am happy that IMU thinks about Rumah Shalom. In 2007, IMU students and staff raised about RM 30,000, which covered our rental for nearly 3 years.” IMU students not only visited the home with food and provisions but also spend time with the children playing games or simply interacting with them. This is done regularly as the IMU community believes in providing sustainable help. Reverend Arulandu adds, “At least two batches had visited us at beginning of the year and another two batches will be visiting us towards the end of the year.” An array of exciting pre-carnival events had already been organised to raise funds. One of the many events was the ‘Casual Wear Day’ and the ‘Project Freeze Mob’. In IMU where students are required to adhere to its formal dress code, ‘Casual Wear Day’ was a day to look forward to. On this day, students and staff who purchased a button badge or t-shirt were allowed to wear casuals, creating awareness of the event amongst students and staff. ‘Project Freeze Mob’ with the theme ‘Time Stood Still’ is an activity where Chariofare ’12 committee members froze at selected locations, all around IMU for approximately 3 minutes to raise awareness about the initiative.
