29 – 30 April 2013 – IMU dental students, mainly from Semesters One and Three, successfully organised Oral Health Week 2013 at the University’s campus in Bukit Jalil. The theme of this event was “Dental Champions – Win a Gold Medal Smile”, which signifies the importance of a simple, but fulfilling smile to the dental students. In this Oral Health Week, the dental students aimed to instill awareness about oral health in a fun manner. These students illustrated basic information on risk factors of oral diseases, maintenance of oral hygiene and importance of oral aesthetics at booths that were set up for the two days. This shows that despite being in the foundation years of their studies, these students are aware of their responsibilities as a healthcare professional in promoting oral health awareness.
There were a number of performances by the multi-talented IMU students during the opening and closing ceremonies of the event. The audience, especially Dean, School of Dentistry of IMU, Prof Toh Chooi Gait and Prof Murray Thomson from one of IMU’s partner dental schools, University of Otago, were amazed by the short but stunning performances which included dancing, group singing as well as table drum, saxophone and band performances.
The opening ceremony was officiated by President of the Malaysian Dental Association, Dr Haja Badrudreen and Vice President of Malaysia Dentistry Department, Dr Shahrol Lail bin Sujak. Vice President and Excecutive Dean of IMU, Prof Peter Pook, Dean, School of Health Sciences of IMU, Prof Khor Geok Lin, Prof Toh and Prof Thomson were also present at the ceremony. Numerous lecturers, staff and students showed their support for Oral Health Week 2013 by watching the performances and visiting the booths.
The Oral Health Week 2013 event coordinators would like to express their gratitude to those who were supportive and willing to lend a hand in leading this event to its success.
