2 November – Three IMU medical students, Gan Soon Jian, Carmen Ching Hui Yee and Lim Li Rong won the second prize in the Anatomy viva and OSCE competitions of the Medics Intervarsity Academic Olympiad (MIAO) 2019, competing with students from ten public and private universities (Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsan Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Tun Abdul Rahman, Cyberjaya University, AIMST University, MAHSA University and Perdana University). Medics Intervarsity Academic Olympiad (MIAO) 2019 is the annual academic event under the Academic and Research Department of AMSA (Asian Medical Students Association) Malaysia. This year, the event was held at Perdana University by AMSA Perdana University and AMSA UPM. This event is an opportunity for the students to test and showcase their knowledge in an interactive and engaging manner. Mastery of the medical knowledge of students from both public and private universities are tested in MCQ, Scientific paper presentations, Anatomy viva and OSCE.

The Anatomy viva had three stations containing dissected specimens and models on Thorax, Abdomen, Upper and Lower Limbs and Head, Neck and Brain. In each station, students were asked 10 different sets of questions from Gross Anatomy, Clinical Anatomy and Embryology on different types of dissected specimens, palstinated specimens and models (total 30 specimens/models). |
OSCE |
The OSCE consisted of the following: History Taking – 6 minutes to take a full history of the patient and summarise verbally to the examiner. Physical Examination – 6 minutes to perform all the 5 tasks given. |
The students were trained under the supervision of A/Prof Nilesh Kumar Mitra while Medical Museum staff, Maria binti Mahamood and Firdaus Mohammad provided continuous support and resources during the preparations for the competition.
