Research Title: Topical Anti-Bacterials and the Role of Pharmacists in the Community Pharmacy Setting in Perak, Malaysia |
About the Project: Skin diseases are among the most common health problem worldwide, which affect around 30% to 70% of individuals. Inappropriate and excessive usage of antibacterial drugs are associated with increased economic burden, delayed in obtaining appropriate treatment and limiting the available treatment. This study sought to explore the perceptions and experiences of community pharmacists (CPs) towards current practice of dispensing topical antibacterial drugs as well as its resistance issue in community pharmacy setting of Perak, Malaysia. This study explored the CPs awareness in the reality of drug resistance issues. However, majority of CPs had never reported Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) even they have positive awareness towards resistance issues. CPs should remain vigilant to detect bacterial resistance as they are one of the most important healthcare profession for ADRs reporting. There is a need of more training and educational programmes to promote rational antibiotic use and improve CPs’ vigilances on antibacterial resistance issues. A balance between professionalism and profitable business goals needed to be achieved in order to meet patients’ satisfaction. |
Congratulations to Dr Sathish Amirthlingam and his team!
