31 October 2017 – A group of 11 students from IMU‘s ME117, DT117 and CH116 conducted a project for their MPU4 Social Responsibility Module under the guidance of Dr Sheba D Mani and Dr Chong Jun Ai, at Bloomers Training House in Cheras. Bloomers Training House, which is an IMU Cares partner home, is a training centre for mentally challenged young adults. The project was about using art as a form of empowerment and expression. The students taught the special young adults how to make ornaments such as Christmas bells, Christmas trees and angels using colourful paper, coloured ice-cream sticks and embellishments such as beads, ribbons and stickers. 
Approximately 38 young adults from Bloomers participated in this workshop. They welcomed the opportunity to express themselves by deftly folding papers and carefully sticking colourful beads on the sticks to make the crafts. Much joy was seen in preparation for the Christmas season as they interacted with the IMU students.
Group leader, Yong Chung Shun (DT117) commented that the students themselves had an enjoyable and challenging experience conducting this project as it was the first time they had worked with mentally challenged young adults. Although apprehensive at the beginning, they learnt how to access the situation. The exposure gave them confidence to understand and deal with patients who may be in a similar situation.
The Christmas ornaments were sold to IMU staff and students. Proceeds from the sales collected was given back to Bloomers for their welfare purposes.
