25 July 2015 – A team of three students from SMK Subang Jaya emerged champion of the School Category of the International Medical University (IMU) Science Discovery Challenge. At the same event, a team from KDU College was the champion of the Pre-University Category. This inaugural event for secondary school and pre-university students is a quiz with questions from biology, chemistry and physics. It saw the participation of more than 110 teams pitting their knowledge against one another for the coveted first prize. As champions, the winning team from each category received a cash prize of RM 3,000. The schools of the top three teams from the School Category received a cash prize of RM 1,000. For the School Category, SM Sains Alam Shah and Sayfol International School took the second and third place respectively. The fourth and fifth place went to SMK Sultan Abdul Samad and SMJK Kwang Hua. The Pre-University Category saw teams from Taylor’s College, Subang Jaya and Taylor’s College, Sri Hartamas taking the second and third place. This first ever biotechnology-themed competition in Malaysia was organised to create greater awareness on biotechnology among students and cultivate interest in health sciences careers.
At the IMU Science Discovery Fair, students and visitors also had the opportunity to join in other activities such as talks, workshops and exhibition. These activities were organised to create awareness on the field of Biotechnology, its application and impact on our daily lives and potential future careers. Talks were on 3D Technology, Fiction vs Reality: The Science of DNA and Embryo Cloning and Biotechnology Careers in the 21st Century.
Students also had the opportunity to attend workshops on DNA extraction and biotechnology in forensic science. Among the interesting exhibits at the IMU Science Discovery Fair were on 3D printing, life resuscitation techniques, use of biotechnology for personal care and many other exhibits.
