Kuala Lumpur, 29 August 2024 – IMU’s 8th Chancellor, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Abu Bakar Suleiman, was honoured with the prestigious Merdeka Award 2024 in the Health, Science, and Technology category for his exceptional contributions to advancing Malaysia’s healthcare policies and services.
The award was presented by His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Muizuddin Shah, Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan, who also serves as the Royal Patron of the Merdeka Award, at a ceremony held on 28 August 2024 at the St Regis Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Abu Bakar Suleiman is a visionary leader whose impact on both IMU and the nation is profound and enduring. Since his appointment as IMU’s President in 2001 and subsequent installation as the 8th Chancellor in 2024, his leadership has consistently elevated the university’s reputation, driving initiatives that enhance healthcare services and clinical training to meet community needs. His guiding principle that “to be a good doctor, one must first be a good person” has not only shaped his own success but also continues to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals.
About the Merdeka Award
The Merdeka Award, established in 2007 by PETRONAS and Shell, honours individuals whose contributions have driven the nation’s progress and inspired generations of Malaysians. As Malaysia’s highest accolade for excellence, it is awarded to those whose achievements have significantly advanced the nation’s development or ignited a deep sense of national pride among its people.
Since 2008, a total of 70 individuals and organisations have been honoured with the Merdeka Award.
