IMU’s Postgraduate Diploma in Implant Dentistry Equips Practitioners with Advanced Skills

26 Aug 2024

Implant Dentistry focuses on the surgical placement and subsequent restoration of titanium implants as a means of replacing missing teeth. Therefore, it is crucial for all general dental practitioners to obtain fundamental information and cultivate expertise in providing implant treatment as the optimal fixed treatment choice for patients. Acquiring experience in Implant Dentistry equips practitioners with knowledge, abilities, and self-assurance, while also ensuring a secure and predictable outcome for their patients.

In light of this, the IMU School of Dentistry began offering a Postgraduate Diploma in Implant Dentistry in 2016. The programme aims to train general dental practitioners to broaden their practice by incorporating Implant Dentistry. The IMU offers the first MQA recognized postgraduate programme for implant dentistry in Malaysia, known as the Postgraduate Diploma in Implant Dentistry (PGDID). Since its establishment in 2016, it has effectively taught seven cohorts of practitioners to independently and proficiently perform implant procedures with safety and effectiveness.

The main feature of this programme is that participating dentists can perform implant procedures on patients while being closely supervised in IMU clinics. They also have access to IMU’s library and online resources, as well as advanced tools such as Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), Software planning for Computer Guided Implant Surgery, and Densah burs for Osseodensification.

IMU ensures that the curriculum is taught by highly competent and experienced full-time and adjunct teaching faculties. The programme has established a dedicated Implant clinic to ensure accurate implant recommendations and provide professional supervision.

This programme is specifically designed to cater to practitioners who have little to no expertise in implant dentistry. A patient-centered approach based on evidence is employed to provide guidance to patients regarding the selection of prostheses, procedures, and materials that are now available. The program features a distinctive learning methodology that provides flexibility through its modular structure based on desired results, delivered through a combination of online and in-person learning.

The new PGDID 2021 Curriculum was introduced in 2021 with a focus on delivering specific learning outcomes related to the development of communication skills, entrepreneurial skills, professionalism, and ethics. This curriculum aims to provide a comprehensive approach to the development of implant practice.

Digital Implant Dentistry

One cutting-edge kind of dental treatment is digital implant dentistry, which involves the use of computer programmes and other digital tools to organise and carry out procedures involving dental implants.

Intraoral scanners and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) are two examples of the cutting-edge imaging technologies used at IMU Oral Health Centre.
PGDID Doctors used computerized data analysis to meticulously arrange the placement of implants, considering factors such as bone quality and anatomic factors to achieve safe and precise outcome. The implant crowns are also fabricated by digital technology to ensure passive and perfect fit for effective function.

What Our Students Say About the Programme

Dr Lim Shin Yi, a private practitioner and currently undergoing training under PGDID

As a young practicing dentist eager to enhance my skills in implant dentistry, enrolling in IMU University’s implant course was a game -changer for me!  From the outset, IMU attracted me with its comprehensive curriculum tailored to both theoretical understanding and practical proficiency. The course structure itself is an impressive testament to IMU’s commitment to excellence.

It seamlessly integrates lectures by renowned experts with hands-on workshops that simulate real-case scenarios all over the world. This approach not only deepened my understanding of implantology but also equipped me with the confidence to apply these techniques and knowledges immediately in my practice. What struck me most was the accessibility and support from faculty members. Their wealth of experience and dedication to teaching ensured that every question was met with clarity and encouragement.

Moreover, the small class size fostered a collaborative learning environment where peers became allies in mastering complex procedures.
