The IMU School of Pharmacy has been actively engaged in outreach activities to inspire students towards a science education and promote public awareness of science, particularly in pharmaceutical sciences for developing a better healthcare industry. The School has conducted a series of hands-on workshops, sharing sessions and science camp for high schools in KL, Ipoh and Johor.
November 2018
The IMU School of Pharmacy conducted an outreach Workshop at SMJK Ave Maria Convent, Ipoh on 8 November 2018. The workshop was aimed to stimulate students’ interest towards science through sharing and interactive sessions. The workshop has attracted participation of 150 Form Four students. In this workshop, the students learnt the importance of pharmaceutical sciences contributing to the advancement of healthcare development. In addition, students were educated on safe use and handling of medicines, food toxicology and methanol poisoning.

March 2019
The IMU School of Pharmacy conducted an outreach Workshop at IMU Bukit Jalil for a group of 40 Form 6 students from SMJK Sam Tet, Ipoh on 29 March 2019. The workshop was aimed to enhance students’ understanding in pharmaceutical sciences through hands-on activities, sharing and interactive sessions. In this workshop, the students gained hands-on experience on preparation of lip balm and unit dose system. The IMU Bachelor (Hons) Pharmacy and BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Chemistry students, Hee Edd Wyn, Sam Tet and Ashley Foo Mei San volunteered to share their learning experience and ambitions with the visiting students.

May 2019
The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry was in collaboration with the Academic Department, Foon Yew (Kulai) to jointly organise the IMU-Foon Yew Science Camp on 27 and 28 May 2019 at Foon Yew Independent High School, Kulai, Johor. The two-day science camp was aimed at enriching the students’ chemistry education as well as exploring chemical diversity and chemistry related areas such as formulation in foods, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Aside from that, the activities conducted demonstrated the relevance of chemistry in our everyday interests and concerns. The IMU-Foon Yew Science Camp recruited a total of 109 F3 students who are interested to explore pharmaceutical sciences and prepare themselves before pursuing a Science Major in the coming year. Through this outreach event, the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department seeks to engage with school teachers and students to raise public awareness of science, particularly pharmaceutical sciences and make an informal contribution to science education in Malaysia. In this outreach event, the students gained hands-on experience on drug extraction, soap, cream and lip balms making as well as food formulation in making edible caviar. In addition, students were introduced to science and entrepreneurship. These students also enjoyed a lot of the interactive sessions using Kahoot and colour cards, which made them realise that learning science can be very fun. The teachers and students appreciated the activities very much and the team received many positive feedback. The teachers and students wish to have the team organise more of these interactive and fun science outreach activities in the future.
June 2019
The IMU School of Pharmacy conducted a day Workshop at the Kuen Cheng High School on 20 June 2019. The workshop enhanced the understanding of Science students in pharmaceutical sciences as well as roles of a pharmacist and career opportunities for pharmacy students in various sectors such as academia, research, industries, community pharmacies and hospitals. Students also enjoyed the various hands-on activities including microscopic observation of bacteria, agar plate culture, antibiotic susceptibility and drug formulation. In addition, students were motivated by IMU pharmacy students’ sharing on their study experience, challenges and expectations.

The IMU School of Pharmacy conducted a hands-on workshop at Sirius Scholar Study Skills Subang on 19 November 2019. The workshop was aimed to enhance students’ understand on pharmaceutical sciences through various hands-on activities. The workshop has attracted participation of 150 students. The workshop was conducted by the four departments of the School of Pharmacy, namely Pharmacy Practice, Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Life Sciences. In this workshop, the students gained hands-on experience on preparation of moisturising cream, prescription interpretation and preparation, proper inhalers handling and use and hardness and friability tests on pharmaceutical tablets. The students also enjoyed the interactive sessions using Kahoot and Padlet.
