May 7, 2014 – The Centre for Environmental and Population Health under the Institute for Research, Development, and Innovation (IRDI) successfully conducted a talk titled “Diabetes Control and Preventive Measures in Hospital Setting” at IMU’s Bukit Jalil campus. The talk was convened by Dato’ Ted Mohr and delivered by Dato’ Zaki Morad Mohamad Zaher and Dr Loh Voon Lee. A total of 27 participants inclusive of faculty and students attended this talk.
It was emphasised at the talk that diabetes could lead to numerous life-threatening health complications. Hence, it is essential to take measures to improve diabetes control such as lifestyle changes and dietary control. Diabetes imposes a large economic burden on the individual and national healthcare system. The cost of treating diabetes complications is 3.5 times higher than treating diabetes itself. It was suggested that dietary counselling service should be provided to the patient to enhance their knowledge. As IMU Healthcare has the vision of moving diabetes care from hospital-based to primary care, it is important to have a focus-group which consists of all healthcare personnel to play each individual role. Another objective of the talk was to stimulate discussion to identify specific areas of diabetes research that IMU should focus on.
