The success of future medicines will depend heavily on the skills of formulation scientists. Thus it is not surprising that IMU is positioned at the forefront of the field of advanced drug delivery in Malaysia with a Department of Pharmaceutical Technology having research specialists in this area. In September, the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, IMU organised a drug delivery seminar with the Malaysia Local Chapter of the Controlled Release Society (MyCRS) at the ICE Training Centre, Bukit Jalil Campus. The CRS is the principal international organisation that provides a forum for people interested in drug delivery and controlled release research. Although the Malaysia Local Chapter was set up only last year it is already showing a strong membership. The seminar featured Prof Benjamin Boyd from Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MIPS), Melbourne, Australia who gave a talk about Nanostructured lipid materials and their applications as drug carriers. Prof Boyd is President of the Australian chapter of the Controlled Release Society and Associate Dean of Research at MIPS. Prof Allan Coombes from IMU is Vice President of the Malaysian Local Chapter of the Controlled Release Society and gave a talk on local delivery of antibacterials from polymer matrices for treatment of trichomoniasis. The event received tremendous response from researchers/academicians from other universities in Kuala Lumpur, including Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Monash University and Taylors University and also Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (Johor Bahru). The participants praised the organising and content of the event with Prof Mohd Cairul, President of MyCRS adding that it went beyond expectations.
