In conjunction with the Nurses Day celebration, we would like to highlight another prominent nursing faculty in IMU, Radha Maniam, who is also the Programme Director of the Bachelor of Nursing (Hons) programme.
Radha obtained her Master in Nursing Science from University of Malaya in 2012. She has been in the healthcare industry for the past 27 years. Her specialty is in the area of renal nursing. With her passion in education, she joined nursing education since 2004 and never looked back since. Currently, Radha is pursuing her final year of Phd in University of Malaya focusing on Q methodology and renal patients. With her dedication throughout her years of nursing service, Radha was awarded the Perkhidmatan Cemerlang award in the category of staff nurses (MOH) in 1999 and Perkhidmatan Cemerlang award in the category of nurse educators (UKM) in 2008. Other than her teaching role, she is also involving in research supervision of undergraduate students. Radha has several research publications and presented her research work in various local and international conferences, including the 2013 International Congress of Nursing (ICN) in Melbourne. She has been an invited speaker for several international conferences, workshops and seminars.
“I always wanted to be a teacher. Fate brought me to nursing. However, being a nurse has changed my perspective as a person. Other than physicians, I learnt a lot from my patients whom I cared for. The love of nursing developed as I grow, and I followed my dream to be an educator,” said Radha.
When asked about her views on nursing for millennials, Radha reiterated that, “Nursing will never die; we need to grow together as ‘us’ not ‘me’. We need to be united to achieve the professional status that we strive for our profession. Research needs to be always embedded in nursing practice.”
