The medium of instruction is English. Students who come from a system of education in which the medium of instruction is not English are strongly recommended to improve their proficiency in English by making their own arrangements to attend additional English Language classes before entering IMU.
It is compulsory for students to attend a course in Bahasa Malaysia as the national language is used in both community health work and the practice of medicine in Malaysia.
There will be a mixture of synchronous and asynchronous learning. As this is an ODL programme, there will be more asynchronous learning via recorded i-lecture, online tutorial, e-forum group discussion, online quizzes etc. Asynchronous learning will be at the student’s own time while students will need to be online/live at certain times for synchronous learning and online class test or examination.
All modules are theory-based except for one. This module is Clinical Practice (posting) module in the final semester (Semester 10) for Nursing Elective 1 (4 weeks posting). There is also going to be case studies, assignments and project paper for students in this programme with the possibility of field visits as well. Students are also required to study MPU courses which are compulsory modules imposed by Ministry of Higher Education.
Students can choose the hospital for clinical practice. They can also choose to practise at the hospital where they are working at. They will then need to identify a local preceptor and IMU will officially appoint the preceptor.
There will be both continuous and final assessments for the students. Majority of the modules employ continuous assessment with a variety of assessment methods such as practical skills, reflective writing, critical review report, research proposal, case study analysis, self-assessment, etc.
As for the final assessment, students will go through an examination which focuses on evaluating students’ application of theoretical knowledge and ability to think critically.
So far there is no scholarships or sponsorships for students of this programme.
The degree that the students will receive upon completion of this programme is Bachelor of Nursing (Hons) (IMU). IMU graduates with this degree are currently working in many countries with majority of them in Singapore. For countries like Australia, UK, US, etc., these graduates will need to register with the local Nursing Board.
