5 July 2023 – The highly anticipated annual IMU Graduate Career Fair, organised by the Industry Partnership and Career Development Unit (IPCDU) of International Medical University (IMU), unfolded with great fervour at the University’s Bukit Jalil campus. Spanning from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, the event presented IMU students with a remarkable opportunity to engage and collaborate with a diverse array of medical, healthcare, and related industries.

 

The event commenced with the momentous launch of both the Graduate Career Fair and the Graduate Trainee Programme, both spearheaded by IPCDU. The presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Prof Gerard George, Group Managing Director of IMU Group, Prof Abdul Aziz Baba, Vice-Chancellor & CEO of IMU Education, and Prof Winnie Chee, Pro Vice Chancellor, Academic of IMU, added a touch of grandeur to the occasion.

In his opening speech, Prof Abdul Aziz Baba conveyed his heartfelt aspirations for the Graduate Career Fair 2023 to serve as a crucial steppingstone for IMU graduates, propelling them towards prosperous and rewarding professional journeys. He emphasized the event’s profound significance in bridging the gap between academia and industry, creating a symbiotic relationship that fosters industry-ready graduates and facilitates the discovery of exceptional talents by companies seeking skilled individuals.

Additionally, he unveiled an exciting initiative, the Graduate Trainee Programme (GTP), designed to provide graduates with invaluable training opportunities and a head start in their career development. The GTP, structured as a comprehensive learning and development initiative, was introduced to equip graduates with essential skills, knowledge, and hands-on experience.

 

During the momentous launch, the Graduate Trainee Programme proudly unveiled 10 esteemed partners, including reputable organisations like Cell Agritech, Cryocord, CSI Medical Research, Greencom Nanotech, Alpro Pharmacy, The Xi Group, IQVIA Malaysia, Nourish-Tech Chinese Medical Centre, HAN Neuro, and Nature Concept.

The booth exhibition emerged as the vibrant centrepiece of the fair, attracting 50 industry partners from diverse sectors, ranging from medical and healthcare providers to pharmaceuticals, retail pharmacy, healthcare technology, insurance, and private hospitals.

Over 400 students from various schools within IMU enthusiastically participated in the event, representing the Centre for Pre-University, Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, School of Health Sciences, School of Pharmacy, School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, and School of Postgraduate Studies.

In addition to the captivating booth exhibition, the fair featured an Essential Skills Workshop on ‘Communication and Public Speaking,’ held at the Auditorium. This workshop aimed to refine participants’ communication and public speaking abilities, ultimately bolstering their professional effectiveness, and fostering robust connections with others.

Furthermore, the fair featured on-campus interview sessions held throughout the event, allowing companies to directly interact with candidates and conduct interviews on-the-spot. This valuable addition significantly enhanced the fair, fostering immediate connections and offering promising employment prospects for the participating students.

Another noteworthy aspect of the event was the IMU Meet & Greet: Networking Session, which provided an avenue for industry representatives, IMU’s Senior Management team, and selected students to interact, fostering potential collaborations and synergies.

 

In the opening remarks of the networking session, Prof Chin Beek Yoke, Dean of Industry Partnership and Career Development, emphasized IMU’s commitment to fostering future-proof graduates through industry collaborations.

She expressed her delight at the success of the annual career fair and acknowledged the collective efforts of the IPCDU team and other stakeholders for its achievement. Prof Chin encouraged the continuous pursuit of such collaborative endeavours in the years ahead.

 

The event earned accolades from participating companies, students, and staff, celebrating the fair’s resounding success in achieving its objectives.

Azita Mohamed, Talent Acquisition Specialist of Alpro Pharmacy Sdn Bhd, praised the fair for its excellent organisation and the impressive range and quality of participating companies. Health Lane Family Pharmacy extended their heartfelt appreciation to the IPCDU team for organising an outstanding career fair. Choo Suit Won, the Key Engagement Senior Pharmacist, expressed delight in meeting numerous bright and enthusiastic individuals at the fair. She commended IMU’s commitment to curating a diverse pool of candidates, allowing them to connect with potential candidates from various academic backgrounds and skillsets.

 

Mohd Siddeq Azha, Service Manager of Dietetics and Service Department at Diet Ideas Sdn. Bhd, shared his positive feedback about the fair. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to meet aspiring students who are eager to make a positive impact on their personal and professional growth. Mohd Siddeq highlighted the fair’s networking opportunities and how it provided additional insights into healthcare development. The event also fostered potential collaborative efforts with other exhibitors.

 

Participating in the fair for the first time, Sunway Medical Centre appreciated the platform it provided to connect with fresh graduates who showed potential as talents. Amanda Yip, Sr. Executive of Human Capital at Sunway Medical Centre, praised the fair’s overall arrangement and organisation, ensuring a successful and productive experience for both exhibitors and students.

Students Shared Valuable Insights Regarding Graduate Career Fair

Earon Lee Zheng Jian, a Bachelor of Applied Science (Hons) in Medical Biotechnology student, emphasized the profound significance of forging personal connections during the fair, as it allowed students to showcase their soft skills and gauge potential employers’ professionalism and cultural fit.

 

Kenneth Ong, a final year student from the BSc (Hons) in Psychology programme, praised the fair for its exceptional ability to shed light on the diverse range of relevant positions within the ever-changing and dynamic healthcare industry.

 

Liew Ruo Qing, currently pursuing BSc (Hons) in Dietetics with Nutrition, commended the Graduate Career Fair for providing meaningful interactions with employers and offering insights from alumni, providing invaluable glimpses into potential career paths.

Lastly, we captured another impactful remark from Prof Winnie Chee, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Academic, who also serves as the head of the Industry Partnership and Career Development Unit (IPCDU) at IMU. She highlighted the IMU Graduate Career Fair as a vital bridge connecting our skilled graduates with esteemed organisations and it plays a crucial role in facilitating professional growth for graduates while helping companies identify exceptional talents.

“I strongly advocate for the fair’s continuation, urging more companies to participate and offering exciting engagement activities in the future. Increased industry engagement is essential for enhancing the employability of IMU students,” said Prof Winnie Chee.

 

The IMU Graduate Career Fair 2023 proved to be a resounding success, providing a dynamic platform for both students and companies to forge meaningful connections and explore promising opportunities within the healthcare and related industries. As IMU continues to foster the symbiotic relationship between academia and industry while striving to become a world-class university, it reaffirms its steadfast commitment to nurturing industry-ready graduates and actively contributing to the progress of the healthcare sector.
