A Journey of Growth and Purpose: Discovering Myself Through Scholarship and Service

What happens when education becomes more accessible? A domino effect of opportunity and responsibility follows; yet sponsorship alone does not suffice. Learning is a two-way exchange: sponsors open doors, and scholars must answer with effort and commitment.

Receiving the 100% IMU-Merit Scholarship wasn’t my one-way ticket to success. Rather than serving as a safety net, it handed me the tools I needed to start over from scratch. Over the course of my three-year undergraduate journey at IMU University, I used those tools to build a solid foundation that I could stand upon, and more importantly, extend to others.

My first year as a Biomedical Science student became a turning point in my academic journey; not because it went perfectly, but because it revealed the parts of me that needed to grow. Balancing increasing workloads, extracurricular commitments, and the search to “fit in” meant that my grades didn’t reflect my full potential at first. But instead of viewing those semesters as setbacks, I resolved to treat them as stepping stones for self-improvement.

With the support of my parents and mentors, I rebuilt my study system piece by piece, learning to better manage my time and develop more productive study habits. Although my heroic all- nighters remained an unavoidable tradition come exam season, my mission to “work hard and think smart” became my guiding principle throughout the rest of my degree. This pushed me to grow beyond just academics and cultivate a strong sense of resilience, leadership, and self-awareness.

My second and third years at IMU University were when everything had begun to take shape as lessons from earlier semesters gave me more confidence and clarity. I learnt to balance academic rigor with meaningful contributions to campus life – using the scholarship not merely as recognition, but as a responsibility to serve.

Through active participation in numerous workshops organised by the Office of IMU Industry Partnerships and Engagement (IPE), I discovered that professional growth greatly complements academic advancement. This inspired me to give back by helping IPE create the same positive impact for other IMU Scholars, co-organising our very first Career Empowerment Bootcamp in collaboration with Prudential Assurance and Jobstreet by SEEK.

Other leadership opportunities also came my way and gradually refined how I communicated ideas, organised my time, and planned for the future. Before serving as Secretary and later President of IMU Scholars Board of Directors (BOD), I held several committee positions for events such as Foundation in Science (FiS) Forum, Educators’ Appreciation Day (EAD), and IMU Scholars Week. These experiences taught me that true leadership lies not in visibility, but in creating the right space for others to excel and shine in their own light.

Parallel to that, my involvement with IMU Society of Biomedical Science (ISBS) strengthened my passion for pursuing a career in biomedical research and deepened my appreciation for collaboration within the academic community. As Editor-in-Chief of the seventh edition of the annual ISBS e-magazine and later Secretary of BioMed (BM) Week 2024, I learnt that behind every successful event lies a series of unseen efforts driven by a shared dedication and vision.

Additionally, volunteering at major university events such as IMU Graduate Career Fair and the annual International Medical Education Conference (IMEC) further shaped my professionalism and ability to collaborate across diverse teams. Each event reminded me that service – no matter how small – remains at the heart of purpose, and that to be an IMU Scholar is to carry the university’s values of excellence, integrity, and compassion into every space we occupy.

Looking back, every late-night study session, last-minute assignment sprint, and conversation with mentors and peers culminated in a deeper understanding of what success truly means.

The IMU Scholarship gave me more than just financial security; it broadened my perspectives and taught me that success is a continuum measured not by accolades but by curiosity, discipline, and contribution.

The scholarship has empowered me to pursue my long-term goal of advancing translational skin microbiome research, bridging fundamental science with clinical applications in skin health.

As I embark on my postgraduate studies and future research opportunities, I hope to carry forward the principles that IMU University has instilled in me: to stay curious, to lead with integrity, and to uplift one another.

Through these cumulative experiences that define my undergraduate journey at IMU University, I’m grateful to have found clarity in my purpose and a lifelong pursuit of growth. To my parents, mentors (A/Prof Dr Lim Chooi Ling and Prof Chin Beek Yoke), peers, and the university that believed in me – thank you for turning my potential into purpose.
