7 June 2013 – A total of 90 guests comprising International Medical University (IMU) and International Medical College (IMC) nurses, staff and nursing students, as well as invited guests from other nursing colleges and representatives from Pantai Group of Hospitals were at the IMU Bukit Jalil campus to celebrate Nurses’ Day. This year’s theme is Closing the Gap: the Millennium Development Goals: 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and emphasizes on internationally recognised health related goals. The celebrations started with a keynote address from Prof Lim Pek Hong, the Head of Nursing Division, who gave a brief account on the celebration of International Nurses’ Day and this year’s celebrations at IMU. These celebrations included a cake-cutting ceremony and a series of presentations with updates on current trends and practices in relation to maternal and child health as well as the prevention of HIVs and other communicable diseases. Participants benefited greatly from the insightful and very informative presentations by two speakers from the Ministry of Health and IMU Healthcare staff, Dr Loh. 
The celebrations continued in the afternoon with the nursing students and faculty from both IMU and IMC visiting NKF and Ti Ratana, as part of their community service activities. The group who visited NKF was given a tour of its premises as well as an explanation and introduction of the dialysis unit. The students also had the opportunity to interact with the patients. At Tiratana, the students visited its Women Care Centre for Elderly where they interacted with the residents and presented fruit baskets to them. These students then visited the child care centre where they had the opportunity to play and sing with the children. Fruit baskets were also presented to these children.

Each year, Nurses’ Day is celebrated throughout the world on May 12 to recognise all of the valuable contributions nurses make to the society. It is celebrated in memory of Florence Nightingale who was born on this day in 1820 and who is regarded as the founder of modern nursing. This celebration is also a way to honor and appreciate the dedication, commitment and devotion to duty and the contributions of nurses’ to the healthcare profession across the globe, without whom, a healthcare setting can never be complete.
