17 June 2014 – 90 participants consisting of both registered pharmacists and pharmacy students attended the talk on ‘Management of Peptic Ulcer Bleeding’ which was held at the International Medical University (IMU) in Bukit Jalil. The talk is jointly organised by the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society-Young Pharmacist Chapter (MPS-YPC) and IMU Alumni in conjunction with the IMU BPharm 10th Anniversary. During the talk, Ms Hoo Yee Yin emphasised on the urgency of dealing with a peptic ulcer bleeding case as it is highly associated with substantial morbidity and mortality, as well as healthcare costs. She gave focused insights into each category of peptic ulcer disease based on the causes and subsequently discussed further about the pre-endoscopic and post-endoscopic pharmacological management of such patients. Some clinical scenarios were also presented to encourage interaction and discussion between the participants. Stressing on the role of pharmacists in the prevention of peptic ulcer disease, she shared some information about preventing the recurrence of bleeding ulcer. Lastly, she listed the importance of identifying the alarming symptoms of peptic ulcer bleeding and evaluating patients for proper management either by the doctor or the pharmacist. At the end of the talk, there was a certificate presentation to the speaker and the announcement for the upcoming talk. Soon after, the participants took the opportunity to catch up with the speaker and their friends.
Ms Lim Fong Ping, an IMU Alumni who is currently working in Klinik Kesihatan Jinjang, commented that the talk was very informative and concise with all the updated information. Some BPharm students of IMU who also attended the talk suggested that the talk could have been improved with more clinical case discussion. The speaker, Ms Hoo Yee Yin is a registered pharmacist in Malaysia and was among the first group of pharmacy graduates from IMU. She is currently working as a clinical pharmacist in the surgical ward of Hospital Serdang. She obtained her Masters in Clinical Pharmacy from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 2013 and US Board of Pharmacy Specialty (Pharmacotherapy) in 2012. She has vast experience managing patients receiving warfarin and methadone from both the warfarin ambulatory care clinic as well as the methadone ambulatory care clinic respectively since 2011. Prior to that, she was working as a therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) pharmacist in Hospital Serdang. Since 2011, she has been the clinical preceptor for pharmacy students from IMU and two other higher education institutions offering pharmacy programmes.
