IMU presented three deserving local charities, Penang Hospice Society, Rumah Victory Children and Youth Home and Ti-Ratana Welfare Society with a cheque of RM45, 000 each following our Chariofare 2015. From this Chariofare, IMU Natural Disaster Fund received RM 37,000 to provide much needed funds for any relief efforts for nature disasters. The cheques were presented at a Cheque Presentation Ceremony hosted by IMU on 11 November 2015. At the cheque presentation ceremony, those in attendance watched a short video presentation of the 2015 event and listened to a speech by the Director of External Affairs, IMU, Prof Ong Kok Hai followed by a short introduction of each beneficiary. The cheques was then presented to each representative from the charities. At the same time, prizes were presented to staff and students for the most profitable booth and the best decorated booth at this year’s Chariofare. Members of the organising committee were then presented with certificates of appreciation in recognition of their hard work and effort which made this year’s Chariofare a success. One of the beneficiaries, Ti-Ratana Welfare Society will be utilising the donated amount to support the children’s tuition fees while Penang Hospice Society will be using it to build a new centre to provide holistic care in the homes of patients with advance life limiting diseases. This service is called the Hospice at Home Programme. For Rumah Victory Children and Youth Home, these funds will be used to rebuild the Children’s Home that destroyed in a fire in April 2015.
These beneficiaries are close to our hearts. Currently, IMU staff and students have successfully conducted several activities in Ti-Ratana Welfare Society and Rumah Victory Children and Youth Home as part of the IMU Cares activities. These include teaching the children to make Chinese knots to provide them with life skills, teaching the children karma yoga as a stress reliever, exposing children to natural field science and basic research knowledge through a number of activities and training of caregivers.
