14 August 2016 – IMU Cares & MAPCU Organ Donation Campaign, in partnership with IJM Land Berhad, organised the IJM Half Marathon 2016. The main focus of this event was to spread awareness regarding organ donation among the public and to get many to register and pledge to donate organs. The volunteers gathered in IMU Clinical School before departing to the destination at 5:30am. Registration forms, brochures, flyers, souvenirs and mascot materials were prepared for the occasion. The volunteers were briefed about the tasks and shifts that were assigned to them. The location was at Dataran Centrio which was opposite Mydin Hypermarket, Seremban 2. We were provided a booth which were appropriately set up and decorated by our volunteers the day before. Runners had already begun to gather when we arrived. The volunteers set up the laptops as well as the registration counter at the booth. We took the opportunity to distribute flyers and brochures to the runners before the marathon were flagged off. The mascots had also started to walk around the location and promote our campaign. The first category was flagged off at 6am, followed by the next category at 6:30am and the last at 7am. The runners started to reach the finish line about an hour and a half after the first flag off. We requested the emcee to announce about our booth to encourage runners to visit. The IMU Faculty and the corporate staff who volunteered arrived early. The faculty consisted of Dr Ravindranath (co-ordinator of the event), Dr Ismail, Dr Rajendran and Dr Anitha. Throughout the event, volunteers went around the area giving out flyers and brochures. They explained about organ donation to the runners while the mascots were getting the attention of the runners. Besides that, there were also people who approached the booth asking questions or wanting to pledge to be a donor. Majority of them understood about organ donation by looking at the brochures and flyers that we provided to them. The IJM land organizing staff were very supportive of our campaign. They came to our booth and pledged as well. The Member of Parliament of Seremban, along with other officials visited our booth on that day and were appraised about organ donation. There were at least 6000 registered runners in the marathon. We managed to get 64 pledges and successfully distributed 944 flyers in total. Awareness on organ donation was certainly enhanced through the distribution of flyers and vocal canvassing. At least 2000 persons know about organ donation, maybe as many as 5000 heard about it.
