15th International Medical Education Conference (IMEC) 2022 held from 14 to 16 October 2022 at the International Medical University (IMU) campus at Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, provided a yearly opportunity for health professionals, health professions educators, managers, policy makers and students to convene and converge intellectual discourses on the conference with the theme “Reshaping Health Professions Education for Equity, Inclusivity and Diversity”.
IMEC 2022 aimed to address the core values of equity, inclusivity, and diversity (EID) for learners and educators to achieve high-quality patient care, effective learning, and pioneer discovery. The goal is to connect healthcare professionals, educators, and learners to rethink and reshape current beliefs in EID, ultimately to develop culturally competent healthcare providers. The conference was also inaugurally organised in hybrid mode after the full virtual conference mode in 2021.
The three-day conference which included pre-conference workshops, main conference sessions (plenaries, symposia, panel discussions and oral/e-poster presentations) and post-conference workshops was attended by 350 delegates from 25 countries (Malaysia, Singapore, USA, UK, Canada, Cambodia, Qatar, UAE, Indonesia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, India, Taiwan, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, Japan, Germany, Australia, Fiji, Barbados and others), joining onsite and online across different continents and time zones.

The conference kick started with eight online pre-conference workshops facilitated by 25 international and local health professions academics of repute on the first day. The workshops ranged on a continuum of equity, inclusivity and diversity from contextualizing reflective competence framework into the curriculum and assessment, deconstructing the journey of successful mentoring relationships, building EID into the medical sciences curriculum, exploring EID through paintings and image theatre, ensuring EID in classroom and teaching observation practices and designing assessments for inclusivity.
Asia Pacific Medical Education Network (APMENet)/15th Niigata Meeting was also organised in conjunction with IMEC 2022. The meeting which provides a scholarly platform for medical/health profession educators in the Asia Pacific region to initiate, facilitate, and conduct collaborative work in medical/health profession education was attended by 15 members with four research projects presented for feedback.
The main conference which took place on the second and third day saw a keynote address, two plenaries, seven symposia, two panel discussions and a closing address delivered by health professions education gurus and experts which drew onsite and online crowds joining the sessions.
The keynote address entitled “Reflections in the Mirror: Why Organisations Need to Practise EID” was delivered by Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir (in the photo above), a socio-political activist who shared her experiences and journey as a non-professional advocate for HIV/AIDS patients, leading to her recognition of the importance of EID in healthcare and education.

The closing address was delivered by Emeritus Professor Ronald Harden on “Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: No Student Left Behind “, emphasising on the importance of reshaping EID for health professions education.
IMEC 2022 received submissions of abstracts for oral and e-poster presentations and IMU-Ron Harden Innovation in Medical Education (IMU-RHIME) Award. The presentations were judged and resulted in three top winners for oral presentations and threes top winners for e-poster presentations.

IMEC 2022 concluded with four online post-conference workshops facilitated by 11 subject content experts from diverse field.
It continued to leverage on EID with developing community learning partnerships, training faculty on formation of personal and professional identity to promote equity, inclusivity and diversity in workplace, supporting struggling trainees and promoting collaboration, wellbeing and inclusivity via virtual student engagement.
