Nursing is more than just a profession — it is a promise to care, to serve, and to bring comfort to those in need. This spirit of compassion shone brightly during a recent community outreach programme organised by the Nursing Faculty at IMU University. A total of 19 participants — including faculty members and representatives from Biomedical Science, Pharmacy (Life Sciences), and student nurses from cohorts NU122 and NU123 — came together for “Ti-Ratana’s Unity in Action: Embracing Community Spirit with Gotong-Royong” on 22 February 2025. Under the guidance of Deepa Kaliappen, the initiative aimed to create a cleaner, healthier, and more welcoming environment for the residents of Ti-Ratana.
The day began with a warm breakfast at the IMU Pandan Serai Café, where participants gathered for an ice-breaking session, sharing smiles and conversations before setting off together. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the peaceful surroundings of Ti-Ratana — the chirping of birds, the rustling of trees, and the gentle morning breeze which created a calming atmosphere that filled us with motivation for the work ahead.

As a student, this was my first experience participating in a community outreach event, and I felt a sense of excitement and anticipation. Before starting our tasks, we took a group photo, capturing the shared joy and enthusiasm of the moment.
To ensure an efficient and organised approach to the cleaning tasks, we divided into two groups. Faculty members and students worked side by side, demonstrating teamwork, initiative, and dedication. As a student, working alongside faculty members made me feel more connected and at ease, allowing me to engage more openly.
Together, we carried out a thorough cleaning — including dusting, sweeping, mopping, and sanitising all surfaces — to maintain hygiene standards. Ceiling and wall fans were wiped down to improve airflow and reduce dust buildup, creating a healthier and more comfortable living space for the residents.
Beyond cleaning, we also decorated the walls with colourful flower stickers, adding warmth and vibrancy to the environment. It was heartwarming to see the smiles on the residents’ faces as they admired the fresh and cheerful surroundings. One elderly resident, who had been living at Ti-Ratana for nine years, expressed her deep gratitude, sharing how much she appreciated the continuous efforts of IMU University volunteers over the years. Her words were a touching reminder of the impact that small acts of kindness can have on someone’s life.
The event was not only meaningful but also enjoyable for everyone involved. The collaboration between faculty and students fostered a strong sense of unity, making the experience even more fulfilling. We appreciated the well-organised structure of the event — from the clear communication about time, location, and assigned tasks, to the smooth coordination throughout the day. The teamwork and cooperation displayed by all made the work feel lighter, and many found joy in being part of something greater than themselves.
As a student nurse, this experience was truly eye-opening and humbling. Stepping out of the clinical setting and into the community allowed me to see the broader impact of nursing beyond hospitals. It reminded me that nursing is not just about providing medical care, but also about offering emotional support, companionship, and kindness to those in need. Engaging with the residents, listening to their stories, and seeing their appreciation for our efforts filled me with a deep sense of purpose. It reinforced my passion for nursing and the importance of serving others with a compassionate heart.

As we wrapped up the day, we felt a deep sense of accomplishment and gratitude. Though physically tired, our hearts were full, knowing that we had made a positive difference. The delicious food provided added to the overall experience, giving us a moment to relax and reflect on the meaningful work we had done.
Following the success of the Gotong-Royong event, participants shared overwhelmingly positive feedback. Many highlighted how the experience strengthened their sense of community engagement and inspired them to continue contributing to similar initiatives in the future. It was a day of giving, learning, and growing — a beautiful reminder that true service comes from the heart.
We look forward to more opportunities to serve and to inspire others to join in making the world a better place, one small act of kindness at a time.
