Power Up Against Diabetes – IMU’s DIABEAT IT Carnival!

24 Apr 2025

The IMU DIABEAT IT Health Carnival on 22 March 2025 was a resounding success, bringing together healthcare professionals, students, and the community to take a stand against diabetes. The event provided individuals battling diabetes with essential knowledge and resources to monitor their glucose levels, recognise symptoms, and take proactive steps toward better health. Additionally, this initiative aimed to raise awareness about diabetes prevention and management while empowering the general public to take charge of their health. With free health screenings, expert consultations, and educational talks, the event underscored IMU’s commitment to community well-being.

Empowering the Community Through Awareness and Action

Raising awareness within the community plays a crucial role in encouraging healthier lifestyles and proactive healthcare measures. The event witnessed a strong turnout of 100 participants, including the general public, individuals with diabetes, IMU staff, students, and members of the Deaf community. To ensure inclusivity, interpreters for the Deaf community were present to facilitate communication during health screenings, reinforcing IMU’s commitment to accessible healthcare.

Event Highlights

Participants benefited from a range of free health screenings, including:

  • General health check-ups conducted by medical doctors
  • Diabetic retinopathy screenings using fundoscopic machines
  • Dental check-ups for oral health awareness
  • General eye screening using visual acuity examination and consultation
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) health assessments, including blood and urine tests
  • Nutrition booth offering interactive engagements on dietary guidance for diabetes management
Medical Consultation with a professional doctor

In addition to screenings, the event featured educational talks delivered by IMU students and alumni, with the support of interpreters for the deaf participants. These sessions covered essential topics such as diabetes education, oral health, and proper nutrition, equipping those who attended the event with valuable knowledge on managing and preventing diabetes effectively.

To further empower individuals living with diabetes, the carnival distributed diabetes care kits and glucometers—equipping them with the tools and confidence to independently monitor their blood sugar levels after receiving personalised diabetes education from qualified nurses.

A Collective Effort for a Healthier Future

The success of the IMU DIABEAT IT Health Carnival was made possible by the unwavering dedication of IMU staff and student volunteers, healthcare professionals, and interpreters for the Deaf community. Their commitment to service and community engagement played a vital role in ensuring that attendees received quality care and guidance.

As we move forward, we encourage everyone to stay proactive in their health journey. Diabetes prevention and management require continuous effort, education, and community support. IMU University remains committed in promoting accessible healthcare and empowering communities with knowledge and support

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who participated and contributed to this meaningful event. Let’s continue working together for a healthier, diabetes-free future!
