From 13–14 April, IMU‘s International Student Society (ISS) hosted its annual trip to one of Malaysia’s most renowned destinations—Penang. Organised by the passionate members of the ISS committee, the trip aimed to bring together new and current international students, helping them become familiar with diverse cultures while fostering new connections and lasting memories.
We embarked on our journey at dawn, and the six-hour ride passed quickly with ice-breaking sessions, meal times, and scenic views through the bus windows.
Highlights of the Trip
Our first destination was Kek Lok Si Temple, where we were introduced to rich elements of the Chinese culture and religion, along with the temple’s stunning architecture. Participants gained insights into how religious icons are enshrined and learned about the customs and etiquette observed at the site.
Next, the not-to-be-missed destination was none other than Penang Beach. A variety of activities—including volleyball, frisbee, and jet skiing—offered truly fun and memorable moments for everyone.
Accompanied by the sea breeze and a captivating sunset view, the experience provided a refreshing escape from day-to-day stress and created shared memories that brought our fellow students from diverse backgrounds closer together.

The second day of the trip was just as vibrant, with two more destinations to explore. Penang Hill, located near the centre of Penang Island, is a well-known tourist spot that attracts countless visitors daily. It offered us another exciting opportunity to immerse ourselves in the lively atmosphere and take in the breathtaking panoramic view of Penang from the hilltop.
Finally, we concluded our trip with a visit to George Town, renowned for attractions like Armenian Street and Chew Jetty. Armenian Street is rich in colonial-era architecture and iconic wall murals that reflect creativity and cultural diversity—perfect backdrops for photography enthusiasts. Just a short walk away, Chew Jetty offers a glimpse into local life, with its charming floating village built on stilts over the water, creating a unique and memorable experience for visitors to observe the lives of locals there.
Final Thoughts
To recapitulate our memorable trip, the visit to Penang was a wonderful opportunity to immerse ourselves in cultural exchange, while creating long-lasting memories along the way. Most importantly, the essence of the trip was to help international students feel at home in Malaysia and integrate seamlessly into the community—without hesitation.
