Choosing IMU: A Decision Fueled by Passion for Chemistry

My fascination with chemistry has always driven my academic interests. When it was time to choose a university, I wanted an institution that offered more than just a typical chemistry degree. That’s when I discovered the International Medical University (IMU). IMU stood out because it was one of the very few institutions in Malaysia offering a dedicated Pharmaceutical Chemistry programme—an opportunity to delve into how chemistry can directly impact healthcare and patient well-being. This unique programme is perfectly aligned with my curiosity about drug formulation and the processes behind developing safe and effective medicines. Knowing that IMU also emphasizes a holistic learning environment convinced me that it would be the ideal place to grow both academically and personally.

My IMU Journey: Academic and Personal Growth

Reflecting on my time at IMU, I am grateful for the wealth of experiences that have shaped me to the person I am today. Academically, the programme’s hands-on approach was a highlight.

From the early semesters, we were already in the labs formulating tablets, capsules, and even semi-solid preparations like creams. These practical sessions not only solidified my theoretical understanding but also taught me precision, patience, and the importance of troubleshooting in real-time. I remember the excitement of watching a formulation come together after multiple trials and the satisfaction of seeing it meet the required standards. Equally valuable were the group projects and case studies that encouraged us to think critically and work collaboratively—skills I have found indispensable.

On a personal level, IMU’s vibrant campus life enriched my journey. I joined several student-led activities and events that broadened my horizons. Whether it was participating in sport activities, volunteering for community outreach, or attending guest lectures by industry experts, these experiences taught me the value of teamwork and adaptability. I also forged strong friendships with classmates and seniors who became my support system throughout this rigorous programme.

Beyond the Lab: Discovering My Path in Medical Sales

After graduating, I stepped into the role of a Medical Sales Representative—a path I had not originally imagined for myself when I first started studying pharmaceutical chemistry. But to my surprise, it turned out to be a truly eye-opening and fulfilling experience.

In this role, I engage directly with healthcare professionals, discussing how the drugs and formulations I once studied and prepared in the lab translate to patient care, bridging the gap between the classroom and the clinic. This customer-facing role has challenged me to adapt my scientific background to meet the needs of a more business-oriented and patient-focused environment. Each conversation and every interaction have broadened my perspective on the pharmaceutical industry and reinforced my passion for this field.

Growth, Gratitude, and Goals for the Future

Looking ahead, I envision myself continuing to grow within the pharmaceutical industry, where I hope to play a part in improving patient care by helping to deliver the right treatments to those who need them.

If there is one piece of advice I’d offer to juniors and prospective students, it’s this: always keep an open mind and embrace every opportunity that comes your way. Your journey might not follow the exact path you had in mind when you started. For me, taking on a sales role was never part of the original plan, but it has given me a deeper understanding of the industry and opened doors I had not considered.

Stay curious, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. The more you’re willing to learn from every experience—inside and outside the classroom—the more rewarding your journey will be.
