IMU’s Medical Biotechnology Programme Hosts 3rd IAB Meeting and Student Forum

The Medical Biotechnology (MB) programme at IMU University hosted its 3rd Industry Advisory Board (IAB) Meeting and Student Forum on 19 September 2025, bringing together industry leaders, faculty members, and students for a day of dialogue, inspiration, and collaboration.

The event kicked off with the IAB Student Forum, held under the theme “Biotech Beyond Boundaries: Research, Partnerships, and Practical Solutions.” Students from MB123 (Semester 5) and MB124 (Semester 3) had the opportunity to engage directly with prominent industry figures, who shared their expertise on current trends, challenges, and future opportunities in biotechnology.

Key highlights from the forum included:

  • Mr Tan Kian Shing, Chief Operating Officer, Synapse Sdn Bhd, who presented “Beyond the Lab: Turning Biotechnology into Real-World Impact in Healthcare,” highlighting the translational aspect of biotechnology.
  • Mr Chan Ying Seong, Director, Greencom Nanotech Sdn Bhd, who delivered a session on “Biotech Beyond + Connecting,” stressing the value of interdisciplinary linkages in creating sustainable biotech solutions.
  • Dr Wong Dutt Way, Head of Marketing, Eppendorf Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd, who spoke on “Precision, Partnership, Progress: The Biotech Journey,” emphasizing the importance of collaboration and innovation in driving biotech forward.
  • Ts Mr Ooi Ghee Chien, General Manager – Compliance & Development, CryoCord Sdn Bhd, with his talk “Career Opportunities in the Cell Therapies Industry – Job With a Future,” which inspired students to consider the growing potential of regenerative medicine.

The student forum fostered vibrant discussions, with students posing thoughtful questions and gaining firsthand insights into the dynamic biotech landscape.

Following the forum, the IAB members convened with MB faculty for the advisory meeting. The session provided critical feedback on the programme, covering emerging research opportunities, curriculum enhancement, and the integration of industry-driven perspectives. Members also discussed collaborative initiatives, such as guest lectures, workshops, webinars, industry visits, innovation showcases, and potential industry attachments for students.

The meeting reaffirmed IMU’s commitment to ensuring that the MB programme remains responsive to the evolving needs of the biotechnology sector, equipping graduates with the knowledge, skills, and industry connections to excel in their careers.
