A Final Act of Love: Exploring the Human–Animal Bond Through the One Health Lens

Chin Hui Sian is one of IMU University’s researchers who explored the deeply emotional journey Malaysian pet owners go through when deciding when to let their beloved animals go.

In a recent publication in Human-Animal Interactions titled “A Final Act of Love: The Decision-Making Experience of Malaysian Owners Electing Companion Animal Euthanasia,” researchers Chang Choon Tian, Ng Suet Choon, and Chin Hui Sian from the IMU University explore the deeply emotional process faced by Malaysian pet owners deciding when to let their beloved animals go.

The study offers valuable insight into the emotional, moral, and cultural complexities surrounding pet euthanasia, a decision often made from compassion rather than surrender. For many owners, euthanasia was described as a “final act of love,” reflecting an effort to prevent their pets from further pain and suffering.

Through in-depth interviews, the researchers found that owners struggled with feelings of guilt, uncertainty, and grief, often questioning the right time to make the decision. Family discussions, financial constraints, and cultural or religious values played significant roles in shaping their choices. Post-euthanasia, owners expressed both sorrow and relief, highlighting the emotional toll of pet loss, which remains under-recognised in many societies.

The authors call for greater empathy and communication training among veterinarians, as well as better access to grief support for owners. In Malaysia’s multicultural context, culturally sensitive care is especially important in helping individuals navigate this challenging experience.

This research reflects IMU’s One Health philosophy, which recognises the interconnection between human, animal, and environmental well-being. It demonstrates how emotional health and compassionate care form essential bridges between veterinary and human healthcare.

Ultimately, A Final Act of Love: The Decision-Making Experience of Malaysian Owners Electing Companion Animal Euthanasia, reminds us that health is not only about treating illness, it is also about nurturing empathy, compassion, and respect for all living beings.
