Discovering Toyama: An IMU University Student’s Journey of Learning, Inspiration, and Cultural Exchange

This programme was a truly inspiring and enriching experience, where I had the opportunity to witness the integration of science across multiple disciplines. It provided me with the chance to attend outstanding lectures delivered by distinguished academics from Japan and other countries (e.g., USA), covering topics such as novel therapeutic strategies, pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacology, and biotechnology-driven multi-omics approaches.

These sessions strongly resonated with my master’s studies in Molecular Medicine at IMU University, particularly in the areas of bioinformatics and multi-omics, as they demonstrated how molecular data and systems biology can be translated into therapeutic innovations.

Working collaboratively with international peers (eg Japanese and Indian) to prepare and present our selected research topic was equally valuable. This experience enhanced my ability to communicate scientific concepts effectively, appreciate diverse perspectives, and engage in teamwork within a global academic environment.

I was also able to contribute my own understanding to our presentation, which focused on wearables, machine learning, and artificial intelligence in personalised medicine, topics that closely align with my background in molecular medicine.

The exchange of ideas during this process not only broadened my scientific outlook but also deepened my appreciation of how emerging technologies and other disciplines, such as neurobiology and sustainability science, can be integrated with molecular medicine to address future biomedical challenges.

Beyond academics, immersing myself in Japan’s rich culture made the experience truly memorable. From sleeping on tatami mats and embracing Japan’s well-disciplined routines to appreciating their unique communication styles, every moment offered new insights into cultural and personal growth. The visit to the University of Toyama’s Sugitani Campus was particularly impressive, especially the renowned natural medicine museum, which houses an extensive collection of natural medicinal resources derived from organisms across the world. Observing these traditional remedies deepened my appreciation for pharmacological science and its historical connection to natural compounds, a field that complements modern molecular medicine and drug discovery.

Ultimately, this programme not only strengthened my scientific foundation but also inspired me to pursue research with a more holistic, multidisciplinary, and international perspective.

It helped me recognise how the knowledge gained from my degree, particularly in bioinformatics, molecular biology, and omics technologies, can be integrated with diverse fields to advance healthcare and sustainability.

Lastly, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to Prof Ishwar Parhar, all the associate professors who delivered their insightful lectures, and everyone involved in organising this remarkable programme.

Their dedication, passion, and vision made this experience intellectually stimulating, culturally eye-opening, and profoundly motivating for my future scientific journey.
