At IMU University, learning extends beyond the classroom.

Students actively participate in IMU Cares Community projects, which focus on mental health promotion, psychoeducation, counselling services, assessments, and various initiatives aimed at improving mental wellness within the community.

These experiences provide students with opportunities to apply their knowledge in real-world settings while developing empathy, cultural sensitivity, and a deeper understanding of the diverse challenges faced by different populations. Community engagement also reinforces the programme’s commitment to social responsibility, encouraging students to become advocates for mental health awareness and accessibility.

“The Master of Counselling (MoC) Programme is a journey where you can’t imagine when starting the first semester where and who you will be in the last semester. While starting to lay the foundations in theory it’s hands on learning from the beginning. As it’s not just a theoretical skill but counselling needs to be practiced experiential learning through observations, role play and real experiences in the community, MoC prepared me well and build my confidence for the actual practice later on.”

Lydia Sophie Jung, Student.

My experience in counselling has been deeply rewarding, as it has reaffirmed my values of community support and helping others, both professionally and personally. With the skills I gained here, the work I am doing has been fulfilling because it not only equips me in supporting others, but also allows me to build meaningful and supportive relationships with lecturers, course mates, and the wider community around me.

Supervised Clinical Practice in Real-World Settings

Developing counselling competencies requires more than theoretical understanding—it requires practice, reflection, and professional guidance.

To support this growth, students have the opportunity to practise their skills at the Mind Health Centre, as well as other established centres under the close supervision of qualified counsellors and psychologists.

These supervised experiences allow students to work with clients in an integrated healthcare setting while receiving constructive feedback that strengthens their confidence and professional competence.

Through direct client interactions, students learn to build therapeutic relationships, conduct assessments, develop intervention strategies, and navigate the ethical considerations that are fundamental to counselling practice.

“My journey in the Master of Counseling has been like a seed slowly growing. Along the way, I have not only learned the skills to become a counsellor, but also come to understand myself more deeply as a person. Through this process, I began to see people and the world with more awareness and compassion, recognising both their struggles and their strengths. Guided by my beloved lecturers and supported by my peers, I have grown to become more self-aware, more courageous, and more accepting. This journey has shaped me into a more grounded and understanding counsellor, while also helping me grow into a more authentic version of myself. Most importantly, it has allowed me to build more genuine connections with others and to show up more fully in both my work and my life.”

The faculty members believe that effective counsellors must continuously engage in personal growth alongside professional development. As such, they work closely with students to create a meaningful learning journey that encourages self-reflection, resilience, and lifelong learning.

In addition to core modules, students can further enhance their competencies through elective modules and a research project, enabling them to deepen their understanding of areas that align with their interests and career goals.

What the Other Students Say about the Programme

My experience in this programme has been a journey of growth through nurturing relationships with the people around me and with myself. Every connection carries a gift. Sometimes it brings me back to parts of myself I had forgotten; sometimes it introduces me to parts I never imagined. Most of these shifts happen almost unnoticed, until one day I realise my thoughts have grown louder, my words gentler, and my heart wider. I guess that’s the privilege of connection; to allow people sprinkle a little glitter into your life, and to leave some behind in theirs.

Low Xiao Qing, Student.

Beyond acquiring professional knowledge, conduct and skills, my dearest learning here comes from the cultivation of the deeply personal. As I go through this journey, I noticed an increasing openness and sensitivity in the way I relate to myself and others. I am excited to carry on my learning process and am looking forward to my future discoveries.

I began IMU’s Master of Counselling with the simple goal of becoming better equipped to support my students, particularly after witnessing the emotional challenges many faced during and after COVID-19. As a teacher and homeroom teacher, I wanted to know how to respond effectively during times of crisis. What I did not expect was how profoundly this programme would transform me personally. The unwavering support, encouragement, and guidance from lecturers created a nurturing learning environment that inspired growth and self-discovery. Through reflection, challenge, and learning about the theories, I gained not only counselling skills but also a deeper understanding of myself.
