A Journey of Learning, Leadership, and Discovery in Pharmaceutical Chemistry: Lim Yee Xuen’s Pharmaceutical Chemistry Experience at IMU University

Leading with passion and teamwork, Lim Yee Xuen (third from right), together with the organising committee and faculty advisor, A/Prof Lee Choy Sin (centre), made K2M Pharmaceutical Chemistry Week 2025 a success.

Article Summary

Lim Yee Xuen shares her journey through IMU University’s Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Chemistry programme, where she combined academic excellence, undergraduate research, leadership, and personal growth.

Choosing Pharmaceutical Chemistry as a Career Path

Choosing a university pathway is one of the most significant decisions a student can make. When I was exploring my options, I felt uncertain about which field would best align with my aspirations. However, I knew I had a deep passion for chemistry and a growing fascination with pharmaceutical sciences.

While researching various degree programmes, I discovered IMU‘s Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. What immediately captured my attention was its distinctive integration of chemistry and pharmaceutical sciences—two disciplines that are fundamental to the discovery, development, and quality assurance of medicines.

The Impetus Behind My Decision to Study at IMU

I have always been intrigued by chemical reactions and their profound impact on the human body. The opportunity to explore these scientific principles within the context of healthcare convinced me that Pharmaceutical Chemistry was the ideal field for me. Coupled with IMU’s reputation for academic excellence and industry-relevant education, I knew I had found the right place to pursue my ambitions.

Scholarly Endeavours and Personal Enrichment: Memorable Moments at IMU

Looking back, my years at IMU were filled with:

  • Valuable learning experiences,
  • Personal growth, and
  • Unforgettable memories.

Academically, one of my favourite subjects was Pharmaceutics, where laboratory sessions provided hands-on experience in pharmaceutical formulation and manufacturing techniques, allowing me to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings.

A major highlight of my academic journey was my Final Year Project, which focused on developing a bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF) composite electrode for the detection and quantification of pharmaceutical drugs. This project provided me with valuable opportunities to strengthen my:

  • Laboratory techniques
  • Analytical skills
  • Problem-solving abilities
  • Teamwork

Working closely with my supervisor and fellow research teammates was both rewarding and inspiring, making it one of the most memorable experiences of my undergraduate studies.

Building Leadership Skills Through Student Organisations

Beyond academics, I actively participated in student organisations and extracurricular activities. These experiences helped me:

  • Develop leadership skills
  • Build meaningful friendships
  • Learn the importance of teamwork

Leading K2M Pharmaceutical Chemistry Week 2025

One of my proudest achievements was serving as the Chair of the Organising Committee for K2M Pharmaceutical Chemistry Week 2025. Together with the committee members, we successfully organised an event attended by many participants in collaboration with the Institute of Chemistry Malaysia. It was a rewarding experience that strengthened my confidence as a leader and event organiser.

Balancing Academic Excellence and Leadership Responsibilities

Despite the challenges of balancing my role as Chair of K2M Pharmaceutical Chemistry Week 2025 with coursework and exam preparations, there are times when I felt overwhelmed. However, with determination, effective time management, and support from lecturers and friends, I was able to overcome these challenges. This experience strengthened my:

  • Resilience
  • Adaptability
  • Perseverance

My Ongoing Academic Journey

I am currently applying for PhD opportunities at the University of Malaya (UM) and exploring research pathways that align with my interests in pharmaceutical sciences.

I am excited about the possibility of continuing my academic journey and contributing to meaningful scientific research.

Into the Future: Dreams I Chase

Following the completion of my bachelor’s degree, I intend to pursue research in the pharmaceutical sciences, specialising in drug formulation and the discovery of innovative therapeutic compounds. Through research and innovation, I hope to contribute to the advancement of safer, more effective, and higher-quality medicines.

Ultimately, I aspire to enhance healthcare outcomes by contributing to the development of safer and higher quality medicines, and to engage in a career where scientific knowledge directly benefits patients.

Words of Encouragement for My Juniors

Follow what truly interests you.

Passion fuels your motivation during tough times and makes the learning journey far more fulfilling.

Maintain a healthy balance.

Academic success matters, but so do your well‑being, hobbies, and relationships. Taking care of yourself helps you perform at your best.

Trust your own abilities.

Growth often comes when you step outside your comfort zone. Stay confident, work steadily, and believe in your potential.

See challenges as opportunities grow.

Whether they are exams, research projects, or leadership tasks, challenges build resilience and prepare you for future success.

My journey at IMU has been more than just earning a degree—it has been a journey of:

  • Growth
  • Discovery
  • Self-development

The knowledge, experiences, and friendships I gained have shaped me into a more confident and determined individual.

As I pursue the next chapter of my career in research, I carry with me the valuable lessons learned at IMU and the belief that curiosity, combined with perseverance, can lead to meaningful innovation and positive impact.
