With a background in hospital dental surgery (BDS/ NUS), PhD in tissue engineering (Uni of London) and a Grad Cert in Higher Education (Monash), Dr.Selvaratnam has served as a clinical anatomist and healthcare educator in UK and Malaysian universities for three decades, including over 15 years in an Australian international branch campus. From 2006-2013, as Foundation Anatomy Coordinator for the new Medical School at Monash University Malaysia, she established a futuristic technology-enhanced lab, the Medical Anatomy & Pathology E-Learning (MAPEL) Lab; integrated with a multi-award-winning networked ecosystem of teacher and student collaborative Smart Tables (MyIP awarded). Her education research is focused on education technology innovations and pedagogical frameworks, specifically in collaborative practical learning, and remote interprofessional health skills e-training, mixed reality and medical imaging applications. Her expertise has been recognised through various awards including the Senior Fellowship-Higher Education Academy (2023), Monash Education Academy (MEA) Award (2018), IMU-Ron Harden Innovation in Medical Education (IMU-RHIME) Award (2015, 2011), Australian Awards for University Teaching-OLT Citation (2012), Monash University Vice Chancellor’s Citation (2010) and ITEX Innovation Award (2018). Recently, she and her team published a public health-focused book on Covid-19 guidelines for Malaysian higher education institutions and students. Her discipline research interests include skeletal tissue engineering and in vitro differentiation. She has co-authored a popular anatomy text/ workbook series for nursing and allied health sciences and served as reviewer for Gray’s Anatomy (39e). On a national/ regional level, Dr.Selvaratnam enjoys working in inter-disciplinary teams and enthusiastically advocates healthcare educator development (MAEMHS Exco), postgraduate surgical training in anatomy (Academy Med Malaysia) and art-science initiatives in health education (ASM ArtScience Committee).
