8 – 10 October 2019 – Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology Departments of IMU’s School of Pharmacy organised a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course on “Drug Metabolism & Pharmacokinetics and Population PK/PD Modelling”. Together with the University’s Centre of Lifelong Learning (ICL), Dr Murugesh Kandasamy, Dr Hira Choudhury, Prof Ong Chin Eng. Mr. Suresh Shanmugham, Dr Sagineedu Sreenivasa Rao, Dr Ng Sook Han and Dr Tan Boon Hooi organised the event held at the International Medical University (IMU), Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The objectives of this workshop were |
---|
to update individuals on advances in Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) |
to discuss current challenges and issues associated with absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME) |
to highlight clinical developments and progress in good early clinical trial |
Additionally, the workshop also covered dosage regimen design in therapeutic drug monitoring and PopPK/PD data analysis using R & NONMEM softwares. Thirty-three (33) participants from Malaysia, Iran and India attended the workshop. Dean of School of Pharmacy, A/Prof Dr Mohd Zulkefeli Mat Jusoh, welcomed speakers, participants and briefed the audience on the theme of Workshop. This workshop was designed to link the theory and practice of Population Pharmacokinetics / Pharmacodynamics (PopPK/PD) modelling used in the drug development process in association with dose, concentration and response before NDA approval and the subsequent launch of the drugs. It covered topics that familiarised individuals from pharmacy, biotech, bioengineering and medical fields in PK/PD research and its applications using R & NONMEM software programmes. The CPD comprised of lectures with real life examples followed by a panel discussion and hands-on sessions to encourage participation and exchange of information. Three notable speakers of the workshop were Emeritus Prof Yuen Kah Hay, University Sains Malaysia, A/Prof Rajan, Manipal University, India and Dr Vijay Ivaturi, Research Assistant, United States. In addition, the CPD has been endorsed with 15 CPD points by Malaysian Medical Association and 15 CPD points by Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society, Malaysia. The key sponsor of this CPD was Waters Analytical Instruments Sdn Bhd.
