Hello readers, my name is Chong Zhan Xuan (Andrew). Soon, I will begin to embark on my journey to a new chapter of studying medicine. During my studies at the IMU Foundation in Science, my goal in studying medicine was to advocate for patients’ well-being and improve the health of communities, which genuinely motivates me to pursue this long, arduous, lifelong learning career. Here is my story of embracing change while staying true to myself.
My interest in healthcare began through a series of medical checkup experiences with doctors and an interest in biology. However, one driving force is my mother’s friend, a paediatrician and an IMU alumna. She has significantly influenced my career since high school; her work ethic has constantly made me think highly of her for many years.
Inspired by her pathway, I actively researched universities offering healthcare programmes during secondary school. After considering various options to find the most seamless path between high school and studying medicine as well as receiving further advice, I was impressed by IMU University’s reputation as a private medical university and its countless years of experience providing one of Malaysia’s best healthcare educations. From that point forward, my decision to join IMU was more straightforward, and I started with IMU’s Foundation in Science (FIS) programme in September 2023.
Experience as an IMU FIS Student
Choosing the IMU Foundation in Science as my primary route towards medicine has never been a regret, and having to be part of this family of experienced lecturers is something I will never forget and treasure for life.
Studying in FIS has not been a walk in the park; I come from an international school background, where my knowledge is incomparable to that of my friends with an SPM background. I have faced ups and downs and have struggled countless times to dig a hole to find my way out during my one-year journey in FIS.
However, the stand-out modules, which, although challenging, such as Biosciences, English for Healthcare Professionals, Cross-Boundary Studies, and Thinking Skills, have persistently challenged and broadened my interest in the medical field; that is what FIS has made me more prepared for my undergraduate studies. Besides that, the FIS lecturers weren’t just teachers; they were all passionate mentors. Mr Chuah, for example, made genetics come alive through his engaging lectures and interactive life stories.
A favourite quote I tell myself daily is, “There is nothing permanent except change”.
Milestones During My FIS Year
In addition to my academic responsibilities, I have also taken the opportunity to become an all-rounded person, strengthening my soft and hard skills within my year at FIS alone. I became a student ambassador and peer supporter, facilitating IMU events as a volunteer and student helper in multiple Open Days and Education Fairs and being part of the fantastic article and publication team to write exciting articles for IMU News in conjunction with the IMU Foundation in Science 10th Anniversary celebration.
I sincerely appreciate the opportunities IMU has provided me. It has taught me a lot about the importance of networking and fostering positive relationships with peers, which are fundamental values I can bring to my future studies.
Additionally, I have participated in many internal FIS competitions, such as the FIS Intercohort Science Competition as a finalist, second place for the FIS Reasoning Wars: Battle of the Fallacies, and winner of the Chariofare 2024 FIS lanyard competition.
Throughout my time, my friends and I have always been close-knit and fought every obstacle during practicals, assignments, and projects, simultaneously establishing fond memories together. I feel grateful for the supportive student community I had here at IMU.
For instance, I would like to thank all the FIS lecturers, my mentor (Mr Parkash), my seniors, and my friends, who have constantly motivated me with helpful advice and supported my journey. None of this would happen without them. A shoutout to my fantastic lecturers (Mr Chuah, Ms Shirley, Ms Saras, Ms Kana, Ms Chow, Dr Pei Ying, Ms Sharon, Ms Azlina, Dr James, Ms Tung, Ms Jessica, Ms Maisarah, Ms Azlina, Ms Aishah, Ms Sha Sha, Ms Siti, Ms Raja, Ms Sharmini, Ms Farah, Mr Liow, Ms Cheryl, Mr Jashan and Ms Izzati.), fellow IMU staff (Ms Ella, Ms Kristin, Ms May Kuan, Ms Attikah and Ms Jasmine) and my family.
Lastly, I am incredibly excited to start my new journey of studying Medicine at IMU. To all future FIS students, enjoy your time during FIS, be bold to embrace new changes, and adapt to different approaches.
Everything is a beginning to new surprises. Most importantly, never give up on fulfilling your dreams; all your hard work will eventually greet you with happiness and satisfaction.
