On 23 March 2018, the Division of Applied Biomedical Science and Biotechnology (ABSB) together with all the members of the International Medical University Society of Biomedical Science (ISBS) jointly celebrated the International Biomedical Laboratory Science (IBLS) Day. This day was established back in 1996 for the promotion and celebration of the key roles that biomedical scientists have in diagnosis and treatment of patients. The ISBS, which consists of all IMU students of the Biomedical Science undergraduate programme gave their best efforts to make this celebration a success with the aim of increasing awareness on the role biomedical scientists in providing healthcare. Similar to last year, the theme provided in 2018 is “Antibiotic Resistance: Biomedical Laboratory Scientists Respond to the Global Threat”. An exhibition on the Biomedical Science field which covered areas of Haematology, Biochemistry, Histology, Microbiology and Forensic Science took place at the Atrium of the IMU Bukit Jalil campus where there were various kinds of entertaining and interesting activities from each topic.
The event first started in IMU last year, which set the bar really high as it was a huge success. This puts the organisers of this year’s event under a lot of pressure due to the high expectations from everyone. To avoid disappointment, the only option was to be even better. Fortunately, with the help from all lecturers and students, the event was once again an incredible success as it managed to attract approximately 221 participants which consists of pre-university students, students from different undergraduate programmes in IMU, students from other universities, primary school students and the public taking part in the activities. It broke the last year’s record of 190 participants.
After the exhibition, everyone proceeded to Lecture Theatre 1 for the second part of the event. There were speeches and warm welcomes by our emcees of the evening, Sheeren Lai Shi Min and Ng Jia Hao followed by welcoming speeches from the President and Advisor of ISBS, Quek Xin Fei and Dr Anil Philip Kunnath. In their speeches, they congratulated everyone who made the exhibition successful. Following that, the Associate Deans for School of Health Sciences, Prof Chin Beek Yoke and A/Prof Shar Mariam gave a brief talk on the importance and career paths of a biomedical scientist. Soon after, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Institutional Advancement of IMU, Prof Victor Lim was invited to the stage to give a guest lecture on Antimicrobial Resistance. Lastly, the Chairperson of the event, Chang I Shuen gave his closing speech with the statistical data on the rates of participation of the event. He ended by expressing his greatest appreciation to the team, staff and all members of the society who made this event a huge success.
